College Football's Underated Players

PSUTyrellSuttonsmall.jpg 1.Tyrell Sutton (Northwestern)- This guy is an animal. The Wildcat runner might have been the best running back in the Big Ten Conference. Did I mention that he was only a freshman.

2. Michael Bush (Louisville)- Did you ever look up rushing stats and confuse him with Reggie Bush. Well Michael Bush is an outstanding tailback in his own right. He plays a similar style to Mr. Heisman.

3. Jeff Samardzija (Notre Dame)- He is not only Brady Quinn's favorite target. He can pitch. Enough so that the Chicago Cubs drafted him in the MLB Draft. He is a tall receiver and should garner consider consideration for the Nation Top Receiver Award.

4. Sam Keller/Rudy Carpenter (Arizona State)- These two may be the best quarterbacks in the Pac 10. Wait they are. Each one has proved that they can step up and put up big numbers. ASU is now Quarterback U.

5. Chauncy Washington (USC)- Hoorah! He is finally elgible. When Washington came in with Reggie and LenDale, he was projected as the best of the three. He had the power that Reggie lacked and the speed that LenDale lacked. If he can put it all together this year, Chauncy might have a 1,000 yard season.

I agree with Bush, but I think Samardzija gets plenty of attention.

You could probably put anyone from the Big Ten NOT on Michigan, Ohio State, or Penn State. Every media member had its love affair with A.J. Hawk and Paul Posluszny and nobody seemed to mention that Abdul Hodge of Iowa led the Big Ten with 158 tackles, about 37 more than Hawk and 42 more than Posluszny.

I would argue that Tackles as a stat is one of the most overrated. The whole thing is subjective to an NCAA official viewing real time from 200 ft above the game. Piles of bodies, 1/2 tackles, assisted tackles, solo tackles, gimme a break. And on top of all that, the type of defense, other players on the field, attacking scheme, all add to the ability of a player. There is not a defense in the world where everyone's assignment is to make tackles. Executing one's assignment is the mark of a solid defensive player, regardless if they make the tackle. Another skewing factor is the type of players surrounding. Hawk was part of a fantastic linebacking crew, he didn't have to make as many tackles.

How can you call Samardzija underrated when he's being talked about as a preseason All-American? And if Washington doesn't put up 1,000 yards in that offense and behind that line he should be considered overrated.
