People please, calm down, I don't want to be an asshole here, but if you've read some of my opinionated posts in the past, you know I'm not above it. Clint Dempsey is good. In fact, he's my favorite current US player, but he is not in the same class of Didier Drogba, Fernando Torres, and Cristiano Ronaldo. Not even close. Those are world class players and Dempsey is at least two levels below that at just good.
There are debates all over the internet about what defines 'world class'. Most are just idiotic rants by a biased fan thinking that his club's best player is deserving of that distinction. 'World class' to me is more than just having great ability or being really good at one aspect of the sport. To me, a player of that level is a great all-round player and has a style that's all his own. A style that is categorically their's, one that if they were just a silhouette, you would know that was them. Sort of like Jerry West on the NBA logo. That's what sets players like Torres and Drogba apart from the Clint Dempseys of the world.
Don't get me wrong, Dempsey definitely has a flare all his own, but he's done nothing special to set him apart from the typical, generic footballer. Let him lead Fulham to the Carling Cup final and then we'll talk. He could lead the league in goals and it would only bring a shoulder shrug from the knowledgeable fan. After all, he plays for Fulham, so who else is going to score for them? And honestly, has any of his goals been anything spectacular? No, mainly just poaches. Let him score a goal like either of the ones that Fabregas has this season. Then it'll be debatable, but as for now, don't be a moron and get carried away.
