C.C. Sabathia got the start for Cleveland and went eight innings allowing only one run. He struck out eight. The win raises Sabathia over the .500 mark to 8-7.
The Indians scored two runs in the first and then Casey Blake, who hit two home runs the night before against Boston, hit another to give Cleveland a 3-0 lead in the top of the third off of Boston starter and former Indian Jason Johnson (3-11).
The Tribe added two in the seventh and one in the eighth on Joe Inglett's second home run that landed just inside the right-field foul pole.
Boston scored in the third on Mark Loretta's fourth homer, and added two in the ninth on an Alex Gonzalez home run.
The Red Sox threatened to get closer in the fifth inning but fell short because of a disputed call by home plate umpire John Hirschbeck when Kevin Youkilis tried to score on a single by Manny Ramirez.
Youkilis slid as Cleveland catcher Victor Martinez fielded the throw behind him and swiped at Youkilis' helmet. The question was whether or not touched the helmet or not and if he did, if Youkilis' foot might have crossed the plate first.
The Red Sox dropped out of first place in the AL East for the first time since June 18. At 63-42 they are just percentage points behind the New York Yankees (62-41) who beat the Toronto Blue Jays 5-1.
