Things started out fairly normal for the Cleveland Indians and Kansas City Royals with Travis Hafner hitting a solo home run (39)in the top of the first inning.

Then the bottom of the first came and things got crazy.

  • Mark Teahen singled to left, David DeJesus scored
  • Mike Sweeney homered to left, Mark Grudzielanek and Teahen scored
  • Joey Gathright tripled to deep right, Emil Brown and Andres Blanco scored
  • DeJesus singled to center, Gathright scored
  • Grudzielanek homered to left, DeJesus scored
  • Brown doubled to deep left, Teahen scored, Sweeney to third

After all was said and done at the end of the first, Paul Byrd had given up nine runs (three of them earned) in only two-thirds of an inning. The Royals added a 10th run before the inning was over.

Most games would be considered over after a 10-1 first inning, but the young Tribe didn't give up. Though consistancy hasn't been the Indians' strong suit this season, they managed to fight back throughout the game.

Third Inning

  • Aaron Boone homered to left.
  • Grady Sizemore homered to right.

Fourth Inning

  • Hector Luna singled to left, Jhonny Peralta scored
  • Sizemore singled to right center, Luna scored
  • Jason Michaels hit sacrifice fly to center, Gutierrez scored.

Fifth Inning

  • Luna doubled to deep right, Peralta scored

Top of the Sixth Inning

  • Michaels doubled to deep center, Gutierrez and Boone scored

At this point, the Indians have brought the score back up to a respectable 9-10. They had almost completely erased the Kansas City first inning, until the Royals offense showed up again.

Bottom of the Sixth Inning

  • Sweeney doubled to deep right, Teahen scored
  • Ryan Shealy doubled to deep left, Sweeney scored
  • Gathright reached on infield single to second, R Shealy scored

So now the Tribe was down 13-9. After fighting back once and then getting beat back down, you'd think the Tribe would just give up, right? It took a few innings but the Tribe would muster another comeback thanks to a few players who hadn't been part of the earlier rally.

Ninth Inning

  • Victor Martinez doubled to deep left center, Hafner scored
  • Ryan Garko doubled to deep left, Martinez scored
  • Luna doubled to right center, Garko scored
  • Shin-Soo Choo tripled to right, Luna scored

The Royals couldn't re-take the lead in the bottom of the ninth and in extra innings, the Indians took their first and only lead of the game.

Tenth Inning

  • Garko singled to center, Sizemore scored
  • Luna singled to right, Hafner scored

Kansas City was shut down in the bottom of the tenth and the Tribe had done the unthinkable, winning the game 15-13. After the first inning, the Royals had become the 81st team to score at least 10 runs in the first inning. Their loss was the first of those games to reach extra innings, only the third in which the opposing team rallied to tie the game or take the lead.

Game Notes

  • Every Cleveland batter had at least one extra-base hit.
  • Rafael Betancourt, who pitched two scoreless innings, got the win.
  • Andrew Sisco took the loss for the Royals.
  • Tom Mastny recorded his second save in two opportunities.
  • Two Sundays ago, the Indians scored 11 runs in the first inning against the Royals. Kansas City scoring 10 times in the first inning marks the first time in major-league history that a pair of opposing teams have put up double-digit first innings against each other in the same season
  • The home squad had won 13 straight games between the Royals and Indians, the longest such streak within one season in 15 years. On Wednesday night, the home team took a 10-1 lead in the first inning and lost.

Poor Kansas City... Is that a record for runs in an inning? Does Armchair have a baseball records page?

No, not even close. I don't know what the record is, but it certainly isn't only 10. :-)

AL record is 17 by Boston in 1953. NL record is 18 by Chicago in 1883(!!!). Oddly, both records were set in the 7th inning. source

I was interested to see what the modern record is for the NL for runs scored in a single inning. It's a tie with 13 between the Braves (vs. Houston) in 1972 and the Padres (vs. Pittsburgh) in 1994.

I think Armchair ought to have a page for records for each sport, if it's a category, it can then go in the encyclopeadia for each sport. Good idea? (Note, it would need someone more knowledgeable than me!)
