Clear Path Foul
A foul committed by a defender in an attempt to stop a breakaway layup. The violation results in one free throw and no change of possession. This is a special case foul in which two conditions must be satisfied:
1. The defender must be behind the opposing player when committing the foul. 2. There are absolutely no players in the path of the offensive player (hench the term "Clear Path"
Clear path fouls often occur in the half court set when the point guard loses the ball to his defender and is forced to foul.
