Clay Buccholz No Hits Orioles

After an amazing performance by Scott Baker yesterday, many people here have been wondering whether 23 year old, Clay Buchholz, could do it as well. In only his second start, he ended up doing something that many amazing pitchers have never accomplished in their entire career: pitch a no hitter. Buchholz pitched the 17th no-hitter in the history of the Boston Red Sox on Saturday night.

Before Saturday's historic 10-0 (landslide) win against the Baltimore Orioles, Red Sox manager Terry Francona spoke of a letdown in Buchholz's Triple-A performance after his Major League debut Aug. 17. For two weeks, the 6-foot-3 top prospect from Nederland, Texas, shuttled across upstate New York, losing his next two starts as a member of the Pawtucket Red Sox.

But, Francona added, "I think we still love this kid to death. And we're excited for a chance to run him out there and see how he does."

For nine innings, Buchholz sparkled with the flash bulbs, with a little help from a David Ortiz base clearing double, a Kevin Youkilis three run homer over the Green Monster, and an amazing diving stop by Dustin Pedroia that I'm absolutely positive that you will see on Sportscenter's top 10 plays. After each out, typically the result of a gravity-defying curveball or an immaculately released changeup, the anxious Red Sox rookie nibbled on his glove, enjoying the scene. By the last out, when Buchholz got Nick Markakis on a called strike three for his ninth strikeout and the final out of the game, the crowd of 36,819 was at a fever pitch.

The New York Yankees won in the afternoon against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, 9-6, staying five games behind, but with Buchholz's singular brilliance, you have to wonder whether or not he will keep this up for the Red Sox.

Buchholz is doing really well with the Red Sox so far. He is now 2-0, in 2 starts, with a 1.80 ERA, and a 0.933 WHIP. I think he is definitely worth keeping on the Boston Red Sox's roster.

Clay Buchholz, you're the man!! Way to go.

Also, if you check on mlb.com, you'll find that it was David Ortiz's double that was the impact play of the game. I'd disagree. What about the K that mad Buchholz win the no no. Or how about the diving play by Pedroia to keep the no no alive?

Nah - I'd give it to Big Papi's bases clearing double. He's about to overtake Lowell for team lead in RBI.

Check this, Jason Varitek is only one behind Ray Schalk now for the most no hitters caught in a career. If you're counting official games, he's tied for the lead.

The Red Sox really have a great young arm in him. Hopefully they keep him and not trade him away next season at the dead line. He looks good in two starts and he should really help the pitching staff the next few seasons

To many people now, there's a huge difference between him and Kason Gabbard. So, I think they're gonna keep him. If they don't, I'll personally travel to Boston and beat some sense into Epstein.

So what if he did it against the Orioles? It's still a no hitter. It's something that Pedro, Clemens, and many other great pitchers have yet, and probably won't accomplish.

A Major League roster is still a major league roster. And the majors have the best talent in the baseball world. It was a very impressive performance, no matter how you look at it.

No doubt, dude. But we can't judge pitchers on just 15-25 innings pitched. You just can't. I agree with you that it's an impressive performance and this is probably the greatest day of Buchholz' life, but what will happen next year? Same thing with Joba Chamberlain. I think they'll do good, but it's not in the books yet that they have... yet.

A perfect game and no hitter are different by the way, Falcon. A perfect game is 27 straight outs. A no hitter doesn't have to be.

My schedule from yesterday to today: I slept at 8:00 at night, woke up at midnight, got on AGM, watched the Sawx game on Gameday, posted an article about the no hitter, went back to sleep at about 9:00 am, woke up at noon, and have been up ever since. I usually have schedules like this, which is why I can't read properly. I feel you, Falcon.
