Clash of the Punters: North Colorado Backup Stabs Starter in Leg

Mich Cozad the sophomore backup punter for University of Northern Colorado has been arrested on a charge of second-degree assult for allegedly stabbing Northern Colorado's starting punter, Rafael Mendoza, in his kicking leg.

Police said the motive may have been competition for the first-string job.

Mendoza was treated and released at North Colorado Medical Center but will miss Saturday's game at Texas State University, coach Scott Downing said.

According to Police Mendoza was attacked from behind and stabbed in his right thigh after parking his car outside his Evans apartment at about 9:30 p.m. Monday.

The assailant fled in a black Dodge Charger and about 10 minutes after the stabbing, a liquor store clerk told police that two men in a car that matched the description stopped outside the store, stripped tape off their license plate and drove away. The clerk gave police the license number and the car was traced to Cozad.

Cozad was suspended from the team, evicted from his residence and expelled from school on Tuesday.

I bet the backup backup punter gave Cozad the idea, so now Cozad goes to jail and the backup backup becomes the starter.

No word whether Cozad is a distant relative of Tonya Harding.

Seriously though, who thought the starting punter job at North Colorado would be so prestigious that it would be worth this?

Isn't it amazing that it only took about four months for all the Arrested Athlete jokes to move from a decade (or more) long stint in Oakland to Cincinnati? They had a brief layover in Minnesota, but now they seem have unpacked in Cincy for a long stay.

You know what I was just thinking Colorado really needed? Another college football scandal. They haven't had one for, gosh...at least a year and a half now.
