The Citrus Series refers to the geographical rivalry and interleague matchup between Major League Baseball's Tampa Bay Devil Rays, an American League team based in St. Petersburg, Florida, and the Florida Marlins, a National League team based in Miami, Florida. Florida leads the all-time series 30 - 17 as of May 20, 2007. This series began play in the 1998 season when the Devil Rays became an expansion franchise. It earned its nickname as a result of the state's mass production of citrus products. This can also be referred to as a Sunshine Series, since Florida's state nickname is the "Sunshine State." This series doesn't have a lot of hype to it due to the reputations of both teams poor on-field performances although attendance in the usually non-crowded Tropicana Field and Dolphin Stadium are much better than usual when these two teams square off. This series will gain interest as both teams gradually improve their on-field products.
