Born on April 15, 1867 in Troy, New York, Cinders O'Brien (John F. O'Brien) played for the Cleveland Spiders, Cleveland Infants and Boston Reds over the course of his 4 year career. O'Brien broke into the bigs on June 23, 1888 with the Cleveland Spiders, and put up a 3.30 ERA in 259 innings pitched in 1888, his rookie year.

There is some disagreement on what was Cinders O'Brien's most productive season. Some believe that it was 1889, when he posted a 4.15 ERA, won 22 games and struck out 122 batters. However, others believe that it was 1888, when he posted a 3.30 ERA, won 11 games and struck out 135 batters.
