Pittsburgh entered the day coming off of a sweep of the Astros. Hot-starting Ian Snell(1-1) pitched for the Pirates against Eric Milton(0-3) of the Reds.
Pittsburgh did their scoring early. In the bottom of the first, leadoff hitter Chris Duffy singled back to the pitcher and Jack Wilson drew a walk. After Freddy Sanchez grounded out to Milton, Jason Bay came to the plate with one out and runners on 2nd and 3rd. On a 1-1 pitch, Bay drove Milton's pitch to left-center, scoring two runs with the double. Brad Eldred followed with a single of his own, putting runners on the corners for Adam LaRoche. LaRoche came through, lining the ball over the second base bag to plate Bay.
Neither team scored after the first inning, until the ninth.
Milton lasted 4.1 innings, allowing only the three runs in the first. Snell pitched 7 shutout innings, striking out four.
Damaso Marte threw a scoreless eigth, but he was lifted for closer Salomon Torres in the ninth to save the 3-0 lead. This was a questionable move, since the first batter of the ninth, Adam Dunn, was a lefty and Marte was a lefty thrower, whereas Torres was a righty. As well, Salomon had been pulled the game before after allowing two runs. The first batter Torres faced, Dunn, took Torres deep to right-center over the seats for a home run. Fortunately for the Pirates, Torres settled down and recorded the final three outs without allowing another run.
Game Notes:
- Dunn's HR was his fifth of the year.
- Jason Bay drove in his 15th and 16th RBI of the year.
- Snell lowered his ERA to 1.59.
- Torres recorded his 7th save.
