Wayne Chrebet, the over-achieving, short, slow, undrafted free agent out of Hofstra University, retired today. Chrebet's story is the stuff of fluff movies. He played at Hofstra University, home of the Jets training facility. After an amazing career for the Flying Dutchmen, Chrebet was invited to the Jets NFL camp by Rich Kotite. Indeed, Chrebet marks the only successful move ever made by Kotite. Chrebet quickly became a fan favorite, overshadowed 1st overall pick Keyshawn Johnson, and became one of the most feared 3rd down receivers in the NFL, if not in NFL history. Indeed, 379 out of his 580 career receptions were for a 1st down. Chrebet retires among the Jets all-time leading receivers, and in my opinion, had a better overall career than Keyshawn Johnson. Curtis Martin, the Jets Hall of Fame RB and inspirational leader, summed Chrebet up best. "I loved the way he played and how he never backed down from anything. He was an incredible teammate. He was a warrior, and I always felt you'd have to kill him to get the upper hand on him. If every player in the NFL had as much heart and desire as he had, football would be illegal."
