Choosing your sports allegiances at a young age...hereditary or random?

I have been in an ongoing argument about the early days in a kid's life when he or she forms those life long bonds with a professional or college team. The argument put forth by my girlfriend, who shall remain nameless and treated as a spy until further sports knowledge has been demonstrated, is that a child will choose his favorite sports team based on both parent's teams. I argue, quite loudly, that little girls don't care about sports and are therefore irrelevant to this conversation but that young boys choose their favorite sports team based on who their father likes. It's plain and simple "man sports law" which has been passed down through generations of families with fathers who drink beer, yell at the tv screen, and give their allegiance to a team from a young age for a whole life. Think about when you were a little boy sitting with your dad during the fall and watching his favorite NFL team play. It didn't matter who mom liked or your sister or any other girl like....plain and simple it came down to who your dad liked. If he liked the Giants, like my father did, then you as his son are required by the un-written law of men to like the Giants. The only amendment to this rule is with college teams. It is a historical fact, in my mind at least, that parent's college allegiances cannot sway this decision. Why? Probably because college sports are affected by too many variables such as, where do you live, who do you see on tv, where do you want to go to college, where did your parents go to college, who has the hottest cheerleaders, who has the sweetest uniforms, which teams college team cap is the most stylish, etc...I could go on for hours but at the end of the day the facts stay the same. Boys will inevitably like the same pro teams as their fathers while boys and girls alike will choose their favorite college teams based on a wide set of variables. What do you the readers think about this?

I was 6 years old. Dwight Gooden was on the mound. I watched the game on TV. I fell in love with the Mets and have never looked back.

Two things I disagree on.

1. Many girls form sports allegiances with their fathers. I know way too many (Even if they have no clue hat they're talking about half the time).

2. College allegiances are just as strong as as professional allegiances. I, for instance, root for the Texas Longhorns even though I got rejected from that school and go somewhere in the east coast. I still root for them and wear their fan gear.

There are many parents out there that tell their kids that they would disown them if they went to Michigan if their father is an Ohio State grad or Alabama if their dad is an Auburn grad. I know most of them are joking but the influence is still there.

Funny, I recall being a little girl who cared a great deal about the Cincinnati Reds, and quit caring because I was personally offended by the baseball strike (and came back to a different team once I started caring again). My dad, however, pretty much just allies with wherever he lives. College allegiances are important depending on which college team you're talking about. Ohio State alliances are crazy strong. It's the only team I've continually rooted for my entire life.

Nice. There are some rules that I disagree with but pretty good. I fail miserably when it comes to football.

Agree about the pro sports between fathera and son, but my sister did the same thing I did and liked all the teams my dad liked. And, if you cheer for a team with the hottest cheerleaders or "sweetest uniforms" (very intelligent dialect, I might add), then you have NO IDEA what it means to be a true sports fan. It's about geography and family heritage, PERIOD.

I think the rule generally applies, but can be offset by a son's relationship with his father and the presence of brothers. I've got several friends who chose (or whose brother chose) the chief rival of their dad's team. IOW, I know guys who root for the Cowboys because their father and older brother liked the Redskins, and I know some Yankee fans who made that choice to annoy the Red Sox fans in the house. Sometimes, familial rivalry is stronger than familial loyalty!
