Child Molestation in Sports

by user Jamel

Child molestation is a problem that is highly evident in youth sport leagues. Molesters are often found in these leagues because of the many targets for molestation present in the leagues. People involved in the youth sport leagues do not detect this problem because the type of molestation that occurs in these leagues is not the typical type that everyone thinks occurs. Not all molestation is the violent and forceful type that most everybody imagines. Most of the sexual abuse that occurs is called the "seductor" type. This type of molester gets in good with the families of the kids and also pays special attention to the kids. They take advantage of weaknesses in the family. If the father of the child is often away on business, the offender sees this as an opportunity to fill in the father's shoes. He is destined to give the child the father figure that he or she needs. The phrase used often in the article in SI was that the kids are "trading sex for attention." The kids are getting attention from the coach in exchange for sexual acts. These kids don't realize what is happening to them because "...they don't understand the seduction process."

Although this problem is such a terrible one, there are not many ways to prevent this. Among the ways of prevention are background checks, a better understanding of the problem, not as close relationships with the coaches, and education and communication with the children. In some states background checks for coaches are mandatory and free, in others they are not mandatory and if wanted they cost the person who wants to check forty dollars. Although this seems like a small price to pay, with all the positive remarks said about the coaches, parents might not want to go spend forty dollars on a long shot. If this situation came up when I was the commissioner or person in charge of the league, I would make these checks mandatory for every coach and every volunteer working with children and I would petition for this to be a nation wide rule. I know from experience that in Massachusetts it is mandatory for all people working or volunteering with children a background check must be done and papers must be filled out that say you have not been incarcerated for any offense in the past. All volunteers and coaches should be checked with the Megan's law CD-ROM sex registry and also checked for further offenses.

Another part of the solution to this problem is that parents need to be further educated on the subject. If parents are as ignorant about the subject as I was they need to be more educated. Before I read this article I did not know that this problem was so large in the United States today. Again if I were the commissioner I would make a class to educate them and teach them that the problem does happen and that it should not be ignored. In the class I would teach the parents how to confront their children and educate them on the problem. They should tell the children that they will not be yelled at for telling on their coaches and that it is not right what the coaches are doing.

A third part of the solution is to not let the coaches get as involved. Although in normal circumstances a coach that can also act as a father figure and be close to his players it is not good in these situations. As I said earlier, this situation is the exact situation that the coaches are looking for. The best thing to do is to keep coaches in their place and let them just be coaches and not go into the personal lives of their players.

I believe that with these new implications in place there will be a significant drop in the number of molesters and increase the percentage of molesters that are reported. Because children are more aware of the problem they will be more responsive to it and will tell more if it happens. It really shouldn't happen because known molesters will not be part of the league because of the background checks. It is unfortunate that we cannot totally eliminate the problem because it is impossible to keep coaches that are wishing to molest for the first time out of the league. With these implications the league should be safer and it should go back to being safe for little kids to develop into mature baseball players and also to allow them to grow up without the complications and problems that being molested can bring upon a child. After these problems are fixed the little league system should become a good past time again.

To be honest I'm far more concerned what goes on at Sunday School in the Church basement than on an open baseball/soccer/football field. Just my opinion but yeah you have to keep an eye out on everyone around kids in general. Why won't the Vatican just let Priests marry so alter boys can be more secure and protected?

Just wondering if Alex is a big fan of that new Showtime series The Tudors? Hot white women and a historical account of England's split from the Vatican. Good stuff.

I already know why we split from the Vatican - King Henry VIII wanted a legal way to:

a) Allow him to marry a lot b) Make more money

c) Cause a fuss

I wrote this because I was talking to my friend Toko last night-- he was sharing how his 5 year old son is starting to play baseball- he said that the coach was a "little off"-- he couldn't pinpoint it but he did think he acted a little homosexual and that he touched the kids too much-- he did pat a kid of the butt after a good play-- is that appropriate? Should a background check be done on ALL COACHES, ALL REFS, ETC ETC- can you trust anyone?

PHOENIX -- Buckeye police arrested an elementary school gym teacher Wednesday, charging him with the molestation of a former student.

Joshua Jacobsen, 31, is accused of molesting a 13-year-old girl during his time as the physical education teacher at Liberty Elementary School.

According to police, the girl came forward Monday and said Jacobsen molested her several times over a two-year period from 2003 to 2005.

Jacobsen taught physical education at Liberty for five years before transferring to Rainbow Elementary school this year.

He's also a coach in the Valley Youth Soccer League, which is where police said he first met the victim.

Liberty and Rainbow Elementary schools are both in the Liberty School District. The school district said in a press release Thursday that Jacobsen "has been removed from campus indefinitely, and the entire matter now is in the hands of the Buckeye Police Department."

Investigators wouldn't say whether the abuse occurred at the school or at another location.

Jacobsen is married with no children and lives in Litchfield Park. Police said he has no criminal past.

Jacobsen had an initial court appearance Thursday morning at the Fourth Avenue Jail. He faces one count of child molestation and two counts of sexual abuse.

Investigators said there may be other victims and asked that anyone with information call Buckeye Police

Why is there so much molestation in arizona???

According to our research of the Arizona and other state lists there were 200 registered sex offenders living in zip code 85007 in early 2007.

In this case, I guess a background check wouldn't work. I think a the best avenue for detering molestation in child leagues is for the PARENTS to be more involved. Instead of letting coaches become their cheap daycare for a couple of hours so daddy and mommy can go molest eachother, maybe they should make surprise visits to practice and make their presence known.

Also, my father once had the wrestling coach over for dinner, because the coach had taken a special interest in me. He wanted me to go on a special diet and lifting program because I was pretty skinny growing up and he wanted to maximize my 4 percent body fat. He was always saying, "you could be a state champ if you would just put on 8-10 lbs of muscle."

Anyways, my dad didn't like that, me being a freshman and all. (I was wrestling 7th graders at the time, totally beating the crap out of them, and we were both cool with it) So he invites the coach over for dinner and they have a long talk afterwards in the back yard smoking cigars. After what looked like quite the debate, I saw my dad put his arm around the guy and let out a big laugh, as he grabbed my coach by the balls. Then he said something probably threatening, because my pops always clenches his teeth like Clint Eastwood when he means business.

All in all things turned out okay. I got to keep doing what I was doing (never came out #1 at state finals though) and my coach didn't look at me funny anymore.

Clayton have you ever seen the South Park episode on the scouts leader?? Anyway, I'm not as worried about sports such as baseball or soccer (if I have a boy he ain't playin a fag game like soccer) where it is outdoors- where all can see. But sports that are indoors--- I don't know-- when I played hockey we use to shower and the coach was always in the locker room-- heck he would even shower after practice with us (when I was 16 years old- not younger) now he was a great guy, no problems trust me-- but that wouldn't be okay today--

Toko here-- I use Jamel's computer some times at work-- anyway, yeah I have the 5 year old Jamel was talking about-- anyway, he is always patting the kids butts every chance he gets-- he also hugs them-- like when my son shows up for practice and stuff he hugs all the kids hello and hugs them goodbye- is that weird??? Plus, he did take pictures of all the kids (clothed)- he put their name underneath and he said that was so he could learn everyones names-- should I be worried?

@Toko - I don't think this is call to worry, but perhaps you'd like to invite the coach over to your home. You could have your wife put on a sexy outfit and be a little flirty and see if he has any interest. If not, go deeper. Make sure he doesn't own a van with no windows, or one of those El Caminos. Also, does he have a mustache? That might be trouble. Use your instincts. Talk to your boy - are you giving him enough attention? If you are, then a molesting coach can't use the seduction method.

I give me son tons of attention. I'm not worried about him getting "seduced" I just don't like how the guys is always touching everyone. Lastly, I don't think all molestors are homosexual (I'm sure some are) but I think it has more of a thing about being in control-- you know someone who always has to have the last laugh, the last word, thinks he is above people, better than people, stuff like that. He does have a mustache though-- damn-- he looks like Magnum PI what's his name-- and it curls at the ends-- Lastly, I did invite him over for dinner already and my wife had her big boobs all nicely displayed, skimpy sundress, she bent over a lot-- he didn't even notice. He doesnt' drink beer either--- he drank martiniis with my wife (she was drinking them and he said- "that looks good can I have one?"-- and he smokes cigars. I'm worried now- you aren't helping Clayton

Thanks I was picturing Mario from Super Mario Bros. So anyways, if this guy was hugging my kid and he was wearing that fruity shirt buttoned like that, I wouldn't have too much of a problem, as long as he introduced me to his "life partner" @Jamel - I saw that SP episode and learned that gays can be scout leaders without a big deal made out of it, so I'm not gonna be homophobic about all of this. But coaches molesting kids is no joke - thanks for bringing this issue to light!

Again, the gay thing is moot, but the molestation thing is real. As far as ball grabbing goes, that's more of an expression of dominance. You have to kind of go in like your going for a punch, then grab and squeeze. It's intimidation, I don't think anyone would really get aroused. Probably just scared like my coach got. If he gets aroused, then that's weird and you need to find your son a new league.

Should I practice on Jamel :)? Hey, do you think kids make up being molestated? Just so they get some attention from their parents? I heard that a kid my sons age said his teacher molested him because his dad was on the computer all day. Do you think that happens a lot? PS- no one took the kid seriously and the teacher was okay

Oh I didn't mean it like that Tyrone-- I'm sorry-- I wasn't implying anything on purpose. Wow- that's pretty sick! Why would anyone do that? But to be honest I did find it weird that a certain someone shared that- I'm not sure what it had to do with anything? It would be like me telling you the time that I picked up a chick in a bar-- I was wasted and she had huge tits-- anyway, we went to her car and she started to give me oral sex-- while she was doing it I tried to feel between her legs and yup- I found a twig and 2 berries.... damn why I am sharing this? Whatever.
