Dave Bush pitched one bad inning and five solid innings for the Milwaukee Brewers but that bad first inning, in which he gave up six runs on six hits, proved too high a mountain to climb, as the Crew eventually lost to the Chicago Cubs 9-3.
Cubs starter Rich Hill didn't exactly make it easy, taking a perfect game into the top of the sixth. Corey Hart put that to an end with a leadoff solo home run. The only other scoring for Milwaukee came in the bottom of the ninth, when Prince Fielder and Bill Hall scored on a Kevin Mench double. Scoring for the Cubs, however, cam early and often.
It started with an Alfonso Soriano double to lead off the game. A few hits, an embarassing defensive play, and a Mark DeRosa 2-run homer, and it was 6-0. Soriano came to the plate twice in that first inning. After that, Bush settled down, pitching five solid innings. But the Cubs put the game further out of reach in the seventh and eighth innings, bringing in three more off of Claudio Vargas, the Brewers' #5 starter whose first start will be Tuesday at the Florida Marlins.
After winning their first two, the Brewers drop a pair and even out at 2-2. Dave Bush (0-1, 9.00) gets the loss. After losing two of three in Cincinnati, the Cubs even out at 2-2. Rich Hill (1-0, 1.29) picks up a well-deserved win. He threw seven innings, and allowed one hit - the Hart home run.
Game Two is Saturday at 12:05.
