The Chicago Cubs dominated the Milwaukee Brewers for the second time with today's 6-3 victory. In a marquee pitching matchup, Carlos Zambrano faced off against Ben Sheets.
It was Sheets who slipped up first, giving up two runs in the second inning, including one on an RBI single by Zambrano. Rickie Weeks brought the Crew back within one by leading off the fourth with a solo home run. Weeks led off the inning in each of his four at-bats. The solo homer was also the Brewers first hit, making it two days in a row that Milwaukee has broken a no-hitter with a home run.
In the top of the sixth, the Cubs put the game out of reach with a 2-run homer from Aramis Ramirez and a sac fly from Henry Blanco, making it 5-1. The Brewers put a run across in the bottom half, but the Cubs answered back in the top of the seventh. In the bottom of the seventh, Geoff Jenkins cut the deficit to three with a solo home run, his first of the year, to make it 6-3, where it stayed.
Technically, Ryan Dempster gets the save for Chicago, but most of the unofficial credit goes to Derrek Lee, who turned a line shot down the first base line from Prince Fielder into a double play, stunting the development of a Brewers rally.
The Brewers fall to 2-3. Ben Sheets (1-1, 3.60) gets his first loss. The Cubs improve to 3-2. Carlos Zambrano (1-1, 6.00) gets his first win, and Ryan Dempster (0.00, 2) gets the save.
The final game of the series will be Sunday at 1:05. The Brewers will be looking to prevent being swept at home by the I-94 rivals, sending Chris Capuano (0-0, 5.40) against the Cubs' Wade Miller (0-0, ---).
