Zach Duke(1-2) of the Pirates was coming off of his best start of the year. The Cubs starter was Rich Hill(3-1), the 27-year-old with a 1.57 ERA.
Duke was the starter who broke first. Derrek Lee doubled to deep right and Aramis Ramirez singled him home for a 1-0 lead.
In the second, rookie Felix Pie singled to left. Hill then doubled and Pie scored on Sanchez's fielding error.
Down 2-0 in the fourth inning, Ryan Doumit hit a ground-rule double, and the cold-hitting Adam LaRoche lined the ball over the secondbase bag to score him. Both pitchers settled down after the fourth.
In the top of the seventh, the Cubs loaded the bases against Duke. Jonah Bayliss came in to relieve him, getting Ramirez to fly out to end the threat.
Ronny Paulino tied up the game with a run-scoring double to the leftfield wall in the bottom of the seventh.
With two outs in the bottom of the eigth, Jason Bay homered over the PNC sign on the Clemente Wall to give the Pirates a 3-2 lead.
Salomon Torres came in to save the 3-2 game for Pittsburgh.
