After last night, no team in Major League Baseball has a winning percentage over .600, something I find remarkable this late in the season.
The Red Sox and Angels split a doubleheader yesterday, the teams with the best records in the Majors, and are on the fast track for securing home field advantage for the playoffs (thanks, All-Star Game...). And you don't think home field matters? As we speak, the LA Angels have a 40-17 record at home, just a smudge over .700 for the season. Wow.
It's amazing how parody found it's way into this 2007 season, more so than I have seen in the past few years. For instance:
- The Red Sox (73-49) with the best record, and arguably the most talent, are only 5.0 games up on the Yankees, who at one point were considered to have a disappointment of a season.
- The best record in the National League right now is the Arizona Diamondbacks (70-53). It's also well documented that the D-backs have also been outscored this season.
- The Cardinals are making a late charge in the NL Central and are three games back of the leading Cubs. The Cards are also three games under .500.
- Don't forget about the cellar. In a year where the White Sox were able to compete, I think we can all say they have been the biggest disappointment this year. They are now in last place in the AL Central with a staunch 54-67 record. The Royals have the same record, but the Sox are on a six-game slide and KC has a more favorable schedule than Chicago.
