Cheating Scandal Rocks Florida State Football Program

11

by Tyrone Briggs

ESPN has just posted an news bulletin that 20 football players from the Florida State Seminole program may be suspended for cheating on an examination after allegations made by a school tutor.

This would also disqualify those same players from playing against Kentucky in the upcoming Music City Bowl.

At last review, there was no apparent response to this story posted on the college's website.

Bobby Bowden might as well just call it quits now.

I'm not surprised that football players were caught cheating. I am, however, surprised that they showed up and actually took a test.

Damn 20 players from one team is pretty impressive. I remember there was a similar scandel like this at UVA about 7 years ago that cost them a few role players and their starting QB, along with a bunch of non athletes.

Maybe they should follow Mitchell suggestion - since most of them were cheating, let 'em get away with it... it's in the past already.

I wonder if the kid that ratted out a good portion of the team has already transferred.

Probably wasn't the work of a rat but a glory-hound professor, a nerdy one who wants vengeance against jocks from his days at Adams College... If not, know anybody that wants to buy a screenplay about a nerdy proffessor getting revenge on jocks?

"The tutor implicated in the audit told investigators he had been providing students with answers for the test since the fall of 2006, according to a university report." Jay Mariotti must be so excited.

Thats typically what it is. You find an angry professor who wants to bring down the athletic establishment because they figure it is tarnishing all the hardwork they have done in the classroom.

It appears that this "tutor" actually worked for the AD Department. "Wetherell ordered an investigation by the university's Office of Audit Services in May after receiving information an athletics department tutor had directed one athlete to take an online quiz for another athlete and then provided the answers."

I wasn't an athlete in college, but if I ever got caught cheating, the professor(s) would rip me a new one. Just because an athlete gets punished for cheating doesn't mean it was because he was an athlete and some "nerd" wanted revenge. It's because he was a cheater.

Anyway, the point is that FSU's had a lot of scandals. In fact, they've probably surpassed the benchmark Miami set in the '80s (although nobody's close to Nebraska for the Christian Peter-Lawrence Phillips Memorial Mid-1990s Huskers "Let's Recruit As Many Rapists As Possible" Award). So while 20 players is a lot, did we really expect anything less (more?) from that program?

Anything more? Yeah, the boosters probably would bitch for a National Championship - at all cost.

it's because of the quotation marks. Quotation marks screw up links... Many of my favorite articles "the_Pete_Rose_Game"(fun_stuff) are hard to link to

Honestly, when athletics, not education, is the main front for all of these universities, what are you going to do? Some of these coaches and even the ADs are probably paying the school lots of money to protect these students. It's a crooked business that starts from college, and heads all the way to the NFL. Money is everything even at the expense of academics. Look at the standards, you have to be really dumb to fail in some of these places. Listen to the players speak, it's borderline retarded, yet the stat is that they were 4.0 GPA students, all-academics, you tell me this isn't a giant business.

FSU has too many football players and not enough college student athletes. Maybe an ethics class would do some good. The problem is we rush these “Football Players” thru college and make them millionaires, its business; BIG BUSINESS. And don’t think FSU is alone, its also happening in Alabama right now. The big problem is that we make these less than honorable athletes role models for our kids when they are really dirt bags with an arm or good hands.

It says they will be suspended for the first 3 games of 2008 as well as the bowl game. I wonder which 3 games the Swofford and the ACC will start them out with next year.

I know this incident may sound typical of FSU, but check out this guy. There's more on Myron Rolle at the end of the article. Gives me hope the scholar-athlete still exists...

FSU should have to forfiet their wins since this all started prior to the season. Think about how that would shake up the BSC numbers????
