Chase Utley Sidelined With Broken Hand

by Brendan.Canney

In the Philadelphia Phillies 7-6 loss to the Washington Nationals, Chase Utley suffered a broken hand after being hit by a pitch. Utley was hit in the 5th inning by Nationals pitcher John Lannan. The iron man actually finished the game, going 2-4, but received the bad news after getting an x-ray. Chase Utley has been a rock for the Phillies this season, batting .336 with 17 homers and 82 RBIs. It is likely Utley could miss up to a month but was quoted saying, "I think it will be sooner than that." Let's hope...

You never know. It will come down to pitching. THe Phillies has a deficiency there. So yes, you are right, the Phils will not catch the Mets. But it is because of pitching and not the Utley injury.

He was actually one of my top 2 MVP candidates (along with Hanley Ramirez)... tough break for him (no pun intended)

As a Mets fan, I'm actually sort of disappointed by this news. Yes, you should take breaks when you get them (no pun intended of course), but sometimes you want to have your opponents at full strength to prove you earned it fairly. In the big scheme of things, this may not matter. The Phillies might rally around the fact that Utley's injured and play well inspite of his absence. But, if not, and they flounder, it could linger on the minds of many playoff contenders and Phillies fans alike, "What if?"

Utley tends to cool in the second half...but his bat not being in front of howard will hurt...

I'm thinking Rowand slides to 3 (or one...but i doubt it) and Rollins remains at the leadoff...This puts Pat Burrell at 5...or perhaps Wes Helms, who is the main benefactor of the Utley injury, as Nunez will be at second and most likely bat 7th or 8th (8th...)

Rollins, Victorino, Rowand, Howard, Helms/Burrell, Burrell/Helms, Nunez/Ruiz, Ruiz/Nunez, pitcher

"With a .256/.316/.311 line this season, Nunez was only trailing Utley by 370 points of OPS. Alex Rodriguez to Miguel Cairo might be the only larger possible injury downgrade in baseball."
