Born on April 13, 1863 in San Francisco, California, Charlie Sweeney (Charles J. Sweeney) played for the Providence Grays, St. Louis Maroons and Cleveland Spiders over the course of his 6 year career. Sweeney broke into the bigs on May 11, 1882 with the Providence Grays, and put up a 3.13 ERA in 146.2 innings pitched in 1883, his rookie year.

Most people believe that Charlie Sweeney's best season was 1884, when he posted a 1.70 ERA, won 41 games and struck out 337 batters.
