Chaotic Cardiac Cubby

As a lifelong Chicago Cubs fan, there have been many brutal years. But none more brutal than what is going on this year. During this past off season, the signings of Bob Howry and Scott Eyre to strengthen the bullpen, the outfield additions of Juan Pierre and Jacque Jones gave us loyal fans a glimmer of hope.

However, this is not the case today. They have gone from the hopeful to the hopeless. They have a manager that is a players manager. He puts players in the lineup that should only be bench players – like Neifi Perez. Ramirez is constantly swinging for the fences, Pierre is batting in the low .250’s, no one knows how to take a walk or run a pitch count up. The Cubs have 164 team BB’s vs 347 team K’s, batting an awful .257 as a team with only a .309 team OBP!

With the exception of Maddux and Zambrano, the pitching staff is a joke. Will someone please tell me why Rusch was even resigned?

The 2006 Detroit Tigers are basically the same team they were in 2003 when they lost 119 games (with the exception of a few players but the root of the team is still there). However, right now they (Tigers) have the best record in all of baseball. What’s changed? The coaching staff! They have a manager (Leyland) that not only is accountable, but also teaches how to win. He (Leyland) is also not afraid to show emotion when things get out of control – unlike Mr. Toothpick in a rock!

In order for the Cubs to be a contender, the whole coaching staff must go! From Dusty Baker to special assistant Sonny Jackson. The philosophy that they are instilling into the players just is not working nor do they seem to care.

Don't you know that all of the Cubs problems stem from a dead billy-goat?

Injuries are a part of the game - everyone has them. The only significant injury has been to Derrek Lee. Prior & wood are always injured so you can't include them to this years failure.

Yes, they were expecting health of Prior, Wood, and to an extent Miller. Which is the reason they have had to keep putting Rusch out there and have at times had 3 rookies in the rotation at once. And they are certainly not of the quality of Verlander or Liriano.

I think that the Tigers also added two important pieces to their team: (1) Curtis Granderson who is proving to be an excellent leadoff hitter with room to grow; and (2) Chris Shelton. Sure Shelton has cooled since his hot start, but he is a huge upgrade over Carlos Pena, who never lived up to his minor league potential.

Don't hate on Carlos Pena. The NU alum has certainly proven his value at triple a columbus! Long live my alum!

Sorry, that's a ridiculous comparison. Yes, I do attribute the vast majority of the Tigers' success to coaching, but this is nowhere near the same team they had in 2003. In 2003, Bonderman was a rookie. He's much more experienced now. These are all players the Tigers did not have in 2003 (you tell me if you think a couple of them are important) - Kenny Rogers, Justin Verlander, Todd Jones, Zach Minor, Joel Zumaya, Ivan Rodriguez, Carlos Guillen, Placido Polanco, Chris Shelton, Magglio Ordonez and Marcus Thames. Those are some big freaking components. How are you gonna say this is the same team they had in 2003? They added five guys that have been All-Stars. You can't call that insignificant change.

The 2006 Tigers are absolutely nothing like the 2003 Tigers. From Granderson to Shelton to Rodriguez to Rogers, most of the guys making an impact on that team now are new. And what has changed with the ones who were still there 4 years ago? They've grown up. Bonderman was a kid with no idea how to pitch. He's developed into a very good pitcher. Time and experience do that to a young player. It has very little to do with the new coaching staff.

And I hate to tell ya, but you had no right to have your hopes up for the Cubs this year. Pierre is considered a good player because he gets drafted in the second round of fantasy teams, but he is absolutely nothing besides steals. And steals don't mean a whole lot in today's game. Jones was never an impact player. He's a platoon player, at best, who's at least doing his part to help this year. And spending so much money on aging bullpen arms was one of the dumber offseason moves that any team made.
