Change is Good for Auld, Bruins

On December 6 the Boston Bruins traded left-winger Nate DiCasmirro and a fifth round draft pick in the 2009 NHL entry draft to the Phoenix Coyotes for goaltender Alex Auld.

Auld played nine games for the Coyotes this season and had a record of three wins and six losses and a 3.54 goals against average. So far in two games for the Boston Bruins he has been great. In his first game for the Bruins he saw twenty-six shots and stopped twenty-five of them against the Toronto Maple Leafs. In his second game as a Bruin, still wearing his Phoenix colored pads and helmet Auld saw forty-five shots against the Buffalo Sabres and stopped forty-five of them, picking up a second straight win. And making Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli look good.

Hold on one second! The Bruins do not need any more goaltending, do they? Manny Fernandez who was brought to Boston from the Minnesota Wild in the off-season was supposed to take over the number one job. However a pesky knee injury hampered his start to the year and help contribute to a slow start. Fernandez has now been placed on injured reserves and his injury appears to be worse than originally thought. Okay, so what about the guy who earned thirty wins for the Bruins last season? Tim Thomas was injured in a game against the New Jersey Devils the day before the trade. Although the injury does not look to be that bad. Tuska Rask the inexperinced rookie has played well when called upon this year, but the Bruins would like him to have a little more experience down in Providence their AHL affiliate.

So Thomas may soon be healthy and ready to go for the Bruins. But a little compatitoin may be good for both goaltenders and push them both to well.

But in the meantime trade for Alex Auld seems to be working out and maybe all Alex needed to get his season going was a little change…after all this is the guy who was involved in a trade for one of the games best goaltenders in Roberto Lungo.

Auld was phenomenal in net for you guys last night against the Sabres. The Bruins have announced Thomas will go back to the starting role when he's healthy, but they've also said they're happy to have security in a backup guy like Auld. Personally, I'd take him over Fernandez any day.

Alex Auld will certainly make things interesting in regards to Boston's goaltending situation. Then again, he's been used to it by now. The Phoenix Coyotes had a logjam themselves and with them picking up Ilya Bryzgalov, there was no way I could see Auld getting the quality playing time he'd need there. As for Manny Fernandez, it's a shame he hasn't been able to shake the injury bug in the last year with that knee.

Fernandez sucks... he use to be good, then he injured his knee, he's not what he use to be and he never will
