Chad Pennington was named the AP comeback player of the year in the NFL today, as reported on www.nfl.com. He earned 27 votes, putting him well ahead of Drew Brees with 8 1/2 votes and Carson Palmer with 5 1/2.
How could there really be another choice? The guy came back from 2 reconstructive shoulder surgeries to lead his team to the playoffs this season under rookie coach Eric Mangini. I mean, you couldn't question this guy even before this season, 2 years ago he came within a field goal of leading his team to the AFC championship, with a torn rotator cuff! Now, to play his first 16 game season of his career, after the 2 surgeries, after almost losing his job in training camp, he was the obvious choice.
You might say, "How about Drew Brees? He had an arm injury too.", or, "What about Palmer? He had to rehab all off season." Well, both of these guys played all season folks. Chad played in 3 games last year. These other guys deserved votes, but not the award. Chad Pennington earned the award, it is well deserved, and good luck to him on Sunday.
