The Cleveland Cavaliers finally signed combo guard David Wesley, a move that had been rumored almost the entire free agency period. Per team and league policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Wesley, 35, comes to Cleveland from the Houston Rockets where last season we played in 71 games (59 starts) and averaged 9.9 points, 2.5 rebounds and 2.9 assists in 33.4 minutes per game.
Cleveland now has 11 players in the guard/swingman role, Eddie Basden, Shannon Brown, Eric Snow, Larry Hughes, David Wesley, Sasha Pavlovic, Damon Jones, Ira Newble, Daniel Gibson, Luke Jackson and Stephen Graham.
This mix includes time-tested veterans (Snow, Hughes, Wesley, Newble and Jones), youngsters still trying to carve out their NBA niche (Jackson, Pavlovic and Graham), and a pair of rookies (Brown and Gibson) looking to contribute in their first season in Cleveland. Of course, not all of these players will end up making the Cavs roster.
Wesley, a 6-foot-1, 203-pound guard has logged 914 career games (791 starts) in which he has averaged 12.9 points, 2.6 rebounds and 4.5 assists. The 2006-2007 campaign will be his 14th season in the NBA.
He currently ranks ninth among active players in career three-pointers made (1,114) and is one of just two undrafted players in league history to score over 11,000 career points, the other being Moses Malone.
He has appeared in 55 games (52 starts) in eight playoff apperances in his career. He has postseason averages of 12.1 points, 2.2 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game.
In eight playoff appearances, he has averaged just over a dozen points per game in 55 postseason contests.
