[edit] RivalriesThe University of Wisconsin and the University of Minnesota own the oldest rivalry in all of Division IA football, dating back to 1890 and have played every year since 1907. The Badgers and Gophers played their 115th game this past season, won by the Badgers, 38-34, on a blocked punt with 30 seconds to play in the game. In 1948 the two teams began the tradition of Paul Bunyan's Axe, which is given to the winner of the annual game. They had previously exchanged the "Slab of Bacon," a piece of wood with the word "BACON" written on it. For the 2004-05 year, the two universities extended the rivalry to the rest of the athletic departments, creating the Border Battle, a competition throughout the school year that allots points to the winner of head-to-head matches in any given sport.
