Princeton's athletic teams have one of the most storied histories in all of college sports. Like many of the Ivy League schools, Princeton was among the first colleges in the United States to have an existence intercollegiate athletics program.

Princeton was involved in what some believe the first intercollegiate football game, playing against Rutgers on November 6, 1869 in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Rutgers won the game, 6-4. (Given the non-football-like score, some believe a Harvard/Tufts game to be the true first intercollegiate football contest.)

Princeton's men's basketball team is a perenially contender for berths in the NCAA Tournament. Along with rival Penn, they have utterly dominated the league, winning or sharing all but two titles since 1962. The Tigers have won or shared the title in 22 seasons.

The Tigers also have a great heritage in both men's and women's lacrosse. Both are traditionally strong programs with multiple national championships.

Penn: Particularly on the basketball court, as mentioned above. Princeton and Penn are also geographical rivals, as the southern schools of the Ivy League.
