[edit] HistoryThe college itself was founded in 1862 as Mission Haus College. Lakeland's football program was founded in 1934 with Elmer Ott as the team's first coach. John Thome is the program's winningest head coach, accumulating a 79-50-2 record from 1967-80. The program joined the Illini-Badger Football Conference in 1976 as a charter member and owns a league-high six conference titles, including the 2004 and 2005 seasons. After joining the NCAA Division III ranks in 1997, Lakeland finally reached the Division III Playoffs in 2005, losing to Augustana, 49-22.
