Cashman's Deja Vu

The following article is from my blog Baseball Hot Corner :

While the roof collapses on the Yank's season, the actions of the man in charge, Brian Cashman, are reminiscent of the Bill Murray movie Groundhog Day. As Yogi allegedly said: "Deja Vu all over again."

Last night's embarrassing 16-0 defeat (the worst road shutout loss in franchise history) is an indication of where the team is now. What's scary is what's being done to alter the course.

The New York Times reported: "Yankee No.1 pick Andrew Brackman had reconstructive elbow surgery last Friday, Brian Cashman said. The Yankees signed Brackman for a guaranteed $4.5 million on Aug. 15, and determined he needed surgery after his first few workouts. "We knew there was certainly a possibility when we signed him but we had to wait and see," Cashman said." This scenario is eerily reminiscent of Brian's acquisition of Humberto Sanchez for Gary Sheffield. The same pattern--build up the potential of the prospect, turns out the player was damaged goods, than say I knew it the whole time but he'll be really good in a couple of years.

While still wincing from the Times article, I see this from the New York Post:

"However, it does provide the Yankees with a chance to take a look at Kennedy, their first-round pick a year ago, or White. GM Brian Cashman mentioned them last week when asked about possible replacements for Mussina. He also said Kei Igawa was in the mix. Cashman didn't mention Matt DeSalvo, who pitched well last night for Triple-A Scranton but has been a failure in two major-league stints.

Brian said: "Kei Igawa is in the mix." Someone said: "Those who do not learn from history are doomed to make the same mistakes."

On April 29TH I wrote an article titled: " Cashman's replacement." I advocated the replacement of Brian Cashman(whose judgement I questioned) with Buck Showalter who had the experience and track record of developing talent. I was criticized for being premature in my conclusion. It was the right move than and it's the right move now.

Back in the day, all of Cashman's ridiculous moves worked out. It appears that the luck has reversed itself, doesn't it? Karmic balance is a bitch. Unless, of course, you're a Red Sox fan like me...

Buck Showalter is a fucking idiot. And he already has a job, so no point.

He also brought in stalwarts such as Bobby Abreu, Jason Giambi, Roger Clemens and Johnny Damon. The future of the Yankees is indeed bright!

got those guys without giving up any talent. If George doesn't mind spending money why not bring in guys for the short term.

Its a brilliant strategy to overpay veterans at the expense of allowing younger players to develop and play. Absolutely genius.

Cano, Cabrera, Hughes, Chamberlain, Duncan, Ramirez, even Desalvo, and Clippard have all gotten chances... if there are young guys ready for a chance they've been given it. find me a guy you'd like them to be playing who you think has a better chance to be successful than those veterans and then we can talk.

many pitchers come back from tommy john surgery (which i would guess if this guy had an elbow injury he had) throwing harder than they did before the surgery. the roof did not collapse on the yankee season because of one loss, no matter how bad it was. they're most likely going to be 2 games out of the wild card at the end of the night with 3 games against Seattle remaining. Before we fire Cashman can we at least wait till the end of the season... and oh btw Cashman also drafted Hughes and Chamberlain... having already made the majors they don't look too awful.

Ibearg--it takes 18 mos for pitchers with TJ surgery to recover, why would you quarantee millions to pitchers with serious injuries when there are other options.Cashman's track record with the notable exception of Joba is terrible, he has more resources than anyone and we get Pavano opening day, Igawa etc. Kelstad--your insightful, fact laden commentary is a real joy. Showalter built two champions. He is a consultant in Cleveland. I know I'm wasting my time responding with facts, but somebody's got to do it.
