NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes agreed a five-year $18 million contract with captain Rod Brind'Amour on Friday, ensuring the veteran forward finishes his career with the National Hockey League club.
The Professional Hockey Writers' Association selected Brind'Amour, 35, as the 2005-06 recipient of the Frank J. Selke Trophy for the Best Defensive Forward at Thursday's NHL Awards.
The deal will pay the veteran centre $4 million in each of the first three years, and $3 million in each of the last two years.
During the regular season, the Ottawa, Ont., native played in 78 of 82 regular-season games and scored 31 goals and 39 assists (70 points) to rank tied for second on the team in goals and fourth on the team in points. Brind'Amour's 19 power-play goals ranked tied for first on the team and eighth in the NHL.
The Ottawa native had 12 post-season goals in Carolina's run to its first Stanley Cup, which it won with a 3-1 win over the Edmonton Oilers in Game Seven of the final series on Monday night.
Personal Opinion...I think they couldn't go wrong with this...as dedicated as he has been to the team plus his playing ability.
