Carlos Zambrano Is An Idiot, And So Are The Cubs

Why now?  Why would Chicago Cubs ace Carlos Zambrano make his move now?

Because it's the right time.

Let's be honest:  if you follow baseball at all, you are wondering why the Cubs spending spree in the offseason didn't include a long-term deal for Zambrano.  They spent millions on Kerry Wood, Ted Lilly and Jason Marquis. (broken, bad, and worse)  They signed Mark DeRosa to a contract after one good year.  They locked up Aramis Ramirez and threw $136 million at Alfonso Soriano.

So why not Big Z?

Because they are the Cubs.

Zambrano recently made headlines by saying that if the Cubs didn't work out a contract for him by the start of the season, he'll walk after 2007 ends.  Dumb, right?  Maybe.

One on hand, he's right.  If the Cubbies can spend $300 million on everyone under the sun, why can't they get a contract to one of the best pitchers in the National League?  Zambrano has a career record of 64-42 with an ERA of 3.29.  He's quickly become a dominating force in the NL... and he's right.  If Lilly and Marquis can get multi-year deals, so could he.  Hell, Barry Zito just got $17 million per, and Z is better than Z... (huh?)

On the other hand, he's an idiot.  Speaking out against your team just as camp opens on a team with big expectations is never smart.  It might hurt the negotiations more than his explosive personality already would.  He should get Zito money, and is currently going to arbitration to get a one-year deal for more than $15 million.  Expect the arbitrator to give him a little more than $12 million this year if the Cubs don't sign him.

My thoughts?  The Cubs will call Zambrano's bluff, he'll win the Cy Young Award this year for the 88-74 Cubs, go to Atlanta, and become a Hall-of-Fame pitcher, only returning to Chicago after he's washed up.

And the Cubbies will celebrate 100 years without a title.

As an Atlanta fan, Id glad take Zambrano on our staff and have him become a 10 plus year staple in our rotation and give him back when he is used goods.

It would be a great fit for him... Smoltz is growing old, and Big Z could be their ace for at least the next 8-12 years. He's only 25.

I don't know the entire story, but I wonder if Zambrano tried to get a deal done with the Cubs "behind closed doors" first. Now, after they failed to, he may be bringing it up publicly.

Now with his comments, I would not be surprised if he is in another uniform before deadline if the Cubs can't work anything out.

If there's one thing that WON'T happen with this situation is the Cubs trading Zambrano.

Yeah... who can afford him? He probably has a trade value amongst the top-20 players in baseball. A 25-year-old pitcher with three super seasons under his belt? Huge stud... and this from a White Sox fan.

No, Barbaro was a huge stud. Why else did they keep him alive for so long?

Sorry Joe, I may be a little off my game today.

"The Cubs will call Zambrano's bluff, he'll win the Cy Young Award this year for the 88-74 Cubs, go to Atlanta, and become a Hall-of-Fame pitcher, only returning to Chicago after he's washed up."

I thought that line was a sarcastic reference to Greg Maddux.

Potentially complicating matters could be the fact that the Tribune Company could be in line to sell the Cubs. It doesn't seem to have had much effect on all the other signings the Cubs have made this offseason (let's not forget the hefty paycheck Lou Pinella will be getting on top of all those player deals), but I don't know how hard management's going to push to re-sign Zambrano if new ownership's on the horizon. I actually don't have a problem with Zambrano speaking up; if I was the ace of a staff littered with mediocre talent and perpetual injury and I saw money flying all around me, I'd be demanding a slice of the pie, too. Cause let's face it, Zambrano would wipe the floor with Lilly and Marquis.

Actually, I have been hearing the opposite, the Trib doesn't care about the contracts because want to sell soon and the next owner will be burdened by the long and large payouts. Plus, if they could squeez a championship out this year, it would certainly boost the selling price.

I don't blame big Z for speaking out. He has always been emotional, but he has always done his best also. I think this came more out of frustration because he wants to stay with the Cubs, but is probably disappointed that Hendry hasn't been agressive in signing him after showing this offseason that money is not an issue anymore.

My prediction, which isn't always right. They go to arbitration but it won't matter because he will have a new contract before April.

As a side note, Z's agent came out and said that this is not the case. Z will not walk away after the season if he doesn't have a contract. Granted, I am sure the agent is just trying to keep another bidder in the pool to raise the price should it come to that.

This is a joke. If the Cubs wasted all that money on over priced talent this winter, they should have known what it would cost to keep their ace.

Dukie -- for the first time in approximately 4 months, I agree with you. The Cubs made a terrible error by not signing Z in the offseason, and will probably lose him.

Well too bad for all the haters but the Cubs answered the call and took care of my main man, the loose cannon but highly reliable, Carlos Zambrano. You gotta love this man. He had a higher slugging percentage than several of our position players and he is a swine mule. Remember this past season when he struck out and in disgust he broke the bat in half on his thigh? I'll take Carlos any day, any time to be one of my starting pitchers. He may be a wild man, but he is a workhorse and I hope he is the first Cubs pitcher in a long while to pitch that "special game" which shall go unnamed to prevent jinxage. Thank you Tribune Company for keeping El Toro in Chicago.

gee how'w that cy young prediction look now? he's a punk diva. Lugging that above ERA around may hurt his back. the cubs are a poor team but that's not worth 2 ER's a game nor is anybody else to blame for the bloated hits to innings ratio.
