Carlos Lee to Rangers

10
Vote

Per ESPN's Keith Law, Carlos Lee is going to Arlington. The Milwaukee Brewers also give up Nelson Cruz and a player to be named later. The Rangers part with reliever Francisco Cordero and outfielders Kevin Mench and Laynce Nix. The Brewers likely traded Lee after the slugger rejected a four-year, $48 million contract. Lee is batting .286 with 28 HRs and 81 RBIs.

That's exactly what I said. But it was more like WOW. I really think the Brewers got taken on this one. Granted, all three of the players the Rangers gave up are fairly young, but none of them seems like they're going to live up to their hype.

I think its a bad deal for the Brewers--Lee's going to be a monster in Texas.

Mench's numbers aren't too far from Lee's. And he could potentially do better. The breaks it down to Cruz for Cordero and Nix which isn't too shabby for the Brew Crew.

Lee: .286, 28HR, 81 RBI, .347 OBS

Mench: .284, 12 HR, 50 RBI, .338 OBS

Average and OBS are very comparible, Mench isn't supposed to be a cleanup hitter or anything. You think it would be better to loose Lee for nothing than replaces his average of getting on-base almost completely?

not my entire comparison, no. but last time I checked batting average is considered a someone important statistic in some baseball circles. how about instead of just giving me a minus and questioning my methods you give an opinion yourself?

The thing about Mench's numbers is that he produces in bunches. He's not a reliable, consistent hitter like Lee. For example, Mench has 12 homeruns, but 7 of them came in a 7 game stretch back in April. He's only had 2 homeruns in May. After producins 22 RBI in April, Mench had just 8 in May, and he has 8 so far in July. He batted .219 in June.

He did give his opinion, and it's that Mench is nowhere close to Lee, and he's right and it's not just in stats either. The Brewers seriously hung their fans out to dry with this trade.

I think I worded my first comment poorly. When I said "Mench's numbers aren't too far from Lee's. And he could potentially do better." I meant better than he is now, not better than Lee. This trade was made so that the Brewers didn't lose lee for nothing at the end of the season. For trading a rental, I don't think this is a bad move at all for the Brewers.

This move may be the end of Geoff Jenkins in Milwaukee because now you have Mench and Jenkins, both right fielders, however, this could also signal a move back to left field, his original position, in which case, if Lee goes and Jenkins stays, I may become suicidal.

Sorry, I said that he had 2 homeruns in May. That should have read 2 homeruns SINCE May.

This is great for Jim Bowden and the Nats. The player most similar to Soriano in terms of skill and what they bring is off the market and the teams (Chi Sox, Angels, Tigers, Whoever else) are all still there since we all know the Rangers were'nt in the Soriano race.

The Brew Crew did get some bullpen help with Cordero. I'm not sure what else they could have gotten if they wanted to trade Lee.

It doesn't make much sense though to get bullpen help when you're giving up your best offensive threat. Now when they're not scoring any runs Cordero can just sit in the bullpen and never get used. Oh that and the fact that there are three former closers on the roster now. That makes perfect sense to me...

Would you Brewers fans rather Lee just walked at the end of the year? I compare this to the Indians in the mid-90s when they traded Kenny Lofton for an aging David Justice. Justice wasn't up to Lofton's standard in value, but they didn't want to loose Lofton for nothing.

The Brewers didn't have a championship calibur team and they wouldn't get any closer by losing Lee outright. So they added a few young pieces and strengthen their pen a little bit and without Lee will have some money to spend in the offseason.

Maybe they'll even pull a move like Cleveland with Lofton and sign their rental back after the season. The Tribe ended up going back to the World Series in 97 because of this kind of a trade. It could work out will in the long run.

I am not a Brewers fan, I am Cubs fan, so this kind makes me happy, but not only did the Brewers get very little in return but they gave away Nelson Cruz. I don't know much about this guy but in 222 AB at AAA, he has 19 HRs and 17 SB to with a +.300 AVG. and a .380 OBP.

Yes I would rather have Lee for the rest of the season and then some. If the Brewers had gotten rid of Geoff Jenkins they would've freed up enough money to sign Lee long-term, then they could've also kept Cruz because Cruz would slide into Jenkins' spot in right. Now we're left with two right fielders that can't consistently hit a f---ing watermelon.

Not saying they should have let him walk, but if you're going to deal your best hitter, get something for him besides mediocre hitters and a reliever that can't get anyone out.

Quite simply, this is a great trade for Texas. They get Lee, who's in the prime of his career. They also get Cruz, who is a budding star in the MLB. Cordero has been a disappointment this year, and Nix and Mench are both average players. Great move for the Rangers.

I'm starting to think this trade is going Milwaukee's way. No offense Texas, but what are the chances the Rangers are going to re-sign Lee? Cruz has been inconsistent and strikes out way too much. If you look at the situation in Milwaukee, Cordero has stepped up and proved to be a consistent closer.
