As we all know, starting pitching has been the Atlanta Braves' downfall for the past two years now. We only have 2 #1 type starters (Hudson and Smoltz), and a #4 starter in Chuck James. Then the Braves have a whole lot of nothing. James should be a very good pitcher next year if he can develop two new pitches.
The Braves next should h ave a healthy Mike Hampton as our #3 or #4 starter. So we really don't have to go out and get 3 starting pitchers. The Detroit Tigers have a plethora of young starting pitchers to deal from. The Tigers will probably want a first baseman or shortstop and a relief pitcher. Carlos Guillen has been playing a lot of first-base lately for the Tigers. In a interview with Carlos Guillen and the "|Detroit Free Press, Guillen mentioned Atlanta shortstop Edgar Renteria among those for whom he would move. The Braves have a young shortstop, Yunel Escobar and Brent Lillibridge, who appears ready to start, and Jim Leyland is familiar with Renteria from their time together with Florida and St. Louis.
The Tigers have only two starting pitchers that they will trade for a all-star slugger like Edgar Renteria. Those starters are "|Jeremy Bonderman and "|Nate Robertson. The best of those two pitchers is Bonderman. Bonderman is having a down year from what is expected from him. But still Bonderman is still one of the best young pitchers in the AL. John Schuerholz should make a Renteria, Smith and Oscar Villareal trade for Bonderman. With a rotation of Smoltz, Hudson, Hampton, Bonderman, and James. Plus, the Braves have one of the best offenses in the NL. If the Bonderman trade goes down, Braves fans start saving your money to buy tickets to the playoffs (I know I will).
