Carlos Guillen: The Strongest Man in the Majors

If you were to wander over to a great site called HitTracker, then you would find the most extensive, accurate recording of home run distances. No surprise, the longest homerun hit this year was by the monster Ryan Howard at 491 feet. However, this shot was assisted tremendously by the wind blowing out. If altitude, wind, and temperature are factored in, then the longest home run in standard distance goes to Reggie Abercrombie's first major league home run earlier this year. That blast traveled halfway up the upper deck in the Great American Ballpark.

While these two players have hit the farthest homers, the Sultan of Swat this year has been none other than the Detroit Tigers' Carlos Guillen. His six homeruns averaged a standard distance (accounting for atmosphere) of 425.3 feet, the longest such average in the majors. Guillen's longest bomb was to the deepest corner of rightcenter in Comerica Park on April 29th. It traveled 438 feet, but would have traveled 463 if it had not lost 23 feet to the wind and 7 to temperature. Guillen may only have 6 HRs but sits at the top of the Top 5 in home run distance ahead of Jeff Francoeur, Barry Bonds, Torii Hunter, and Jim Thome.

HitTracker is fairly interesting. But there are so many assumptions in creating that data that I don't know how much accuracy we can attribute to it. On another note, hopefully soon enough RFID tags will get so cheap we can just put them into baseballs and get exact numbers of how far they go yard.

I still can't believe the Astros traded Guillen AND Freddy Garcia for a two-month loan on Randy Johnson. Man, do they look dumb for that one.

A good run? They sold their future for a first round elimination at the hands of the Padres. They only won one game against San Diego. A lot of people thought they were going to the World Series that year, but they didn't make it. For a first round elimination, they traded two future All-Stars.

Apparently Abraham Nunez, who tested positive for steroids today, was jealous of Guillen.

Randy Johnson held up his end of the deal going 10-1 with a 1.28 ERA for the Astros.

Not saying Johnson didn't hold up his end of the deal. He absolutely did. He pitched great in the regular season, and he pitched great in the post season. As I recall, he even did a little hitting. But that's not the point. The point is that the Astros traded away, among others, two of the top prospects not just in their system, but in the country. Two prospects that ended up being All-Stars, and are still going quite strong. And they traded that for a pitcher they only got a few months out of. Randy Johnson pitched great for them, but they traded the farm for a player they only had for a few months. That doesn't amount to a good trade, in my mind.

"Hindsight is 20/20 my friend." Had they won the WS, would you be singing the same tune?

Is Guillen as strong as Pat Robertson though?

David Wright's blast against yanks on Sat was a bomb, muy impressivo in a non-hitters park. HitTracker lists it as 447 and 442 adj, +11 with wind though. In shea w/ wind going crazy, I think that's harsh.
