Carlos Gomez is the Fastest Man in Baseball

(From MetsLifer.com) You might think the title is a bit of a hyperbole, but I assure you it's not. During Sunday's Mets game, Carlos Gomez legged out a bunt base hit like I have never seen before. I mean I know he's fast, but what happened next was unreal.

The SNY crew timed Gomez from the batter's box to first base. Ralph Kiner remarked that the record for going home to first was 3.3 seconds and that was by a left handed batter.

Gomez was clocked at just over 3.4. And he bats right handed. And, as Gary Cohen noted, he looked backwards twice on his way to first base.

I had heard people say he's faster than Jose Reyes, but sometimes it's all hype. This is proof.3.4 seconds to first base. I can't even type "3.4 seconds to first base" in 3.4 seconds.

Can't wait for Carlos Gomez to develop and have him and Jose Reyes atop the Mets lineup for years to come.

I don't know, Michael Bourne of the Phillies may be the fatest man in baseball. The Phils may have finally given up on Pat the Batless Burrell, so Bourne may get some more playing time for the rest of the season.

Arguably, I've heard both...Ichiro also get a lot of love in this department...although...having seen bourne in very limited time...he looks ridiculously fast...

You guys are high!!!!! There is no way Gomez is faster than Ichiro, or Crawford. Hell, he's not even faster than Reyes. And by the way I don't think that there is an official record, I know that thats what Ralph Kiner said, but Joey Gathwright, and Mickey Mantle both ran 3.1 on bunts home to first.

good question but, i would take situational speed over flat out any time, dave roberts single handedley pulled off a clean steal of second base in chruch time of the 04 alcs and that eventually led to him scoring the winning run. witch eneded with the sox taking the series down 3 and coming back and u know the rest.

Isn't running from an at bat the most difficult situation? How about running for a fly ball... Roberts is fast and all and he did swipe that bag, but stealing a base (running-wise) is much easier than the situations i just mentioned...

Yes Shane Victorino is faster than Gomez too. Roberts was faster then than now, but the man can still fly.

Do people forget how fast Scott Podsednik was and still is, is it just because he's white. That man has got to be one of the fastest man in baseball ever. I mean he was origionally a track star. He's never gotten the credit he deserved for being one of the fastest man in baseball. He stole 70 bases and only got caugth 13 times in the 2004 season. Thats an amazing steal success rate fore a guy running that much, sure beats jose reyes getting caugth 21 times last year. He may not be the fastest guy in the bigs now, but 7 years ago when Podsednik was 25 and just hitting the bigs I'am almost positive that he would burn all of these guys who you are trying to call the fastest man in the bigs. Reyes even said it himeself that Gomez is faster than he is, and I read somewhere that a scout said Gomez could dust Reyes in a foot race. Thats saying something when some consider Reyes the fastest player in the league.

mantle was a slow starter, and was still accelerating when crossing first base. Timed on five occasions in 1952, all of Mantle's times were faster than anyone else's except Vada Pinson whom he beat in a footrace at the 1956 All Star game. on efootage.com there is a clip of Mantle batting right handed beating out an ordinary grounder to third base, and the timer on the screen shows it under 4.0 secs. I wonder what his top speed was...35 mph?!
