Cards Acquire Belliard

10
Vote

MLB.com is reporting that the St. Louis Cardinals have traded for Cleveland Indians second baseman Ronnie Belliard. Belliard had been sidelined for six games with a hamstring injury but has played the last two days and shown he is healthy. The Indians will receive utility man Hector Luna in exchange for Belliard. This continues the Indians' firesale that began in earnest when they traded closer Bob Wickman to the Atlanta Braves last week. Belliard is hitting .289 with eight homers and 44 RBIs in 2006.

I'll say this: Belliard is fat and lazy. He committed a terrible baserunning error in the 9th inning today, getting forced out at third on a bloop single to left with no one out. The Indians ended up with zero runs and lost to my beloved M's. I wouldn't want him.

You're basing your feelings about Belliard on one baserunning error? He has a solid bat, turns the double play faster than most, and has been a fan favorite in Cleveland over the past few years. As someone who watches him every day, I can tell you that he is a good if not spectacular player who should be a very solid contributer to any playoff contender.

It wasn't a baserunning error, it was a good fielding play. For a slow guy like Belliard he couldn't do more than he did. I'd like to see Belliard pull in a little more than Hector Luna. However, I'd take Boone for Luna. Or Boone for Luna's game-used undershirt.

Exactly right, CPCP. If Belliard goes too far toward third and Ibanez makes the catch, Ronnie is out at second and would be getting flamed for that. Either way, he was screwed.

Just to throw in my view on this, I'm extremely happy. I've long been saying Inglett should get a chance to start every day, and this will be his opportunity. If he keeps hitting like he has, he may win the 2B job for 2007. If not, then we know the team needs to address that position in the offseason. On the other hand, we also get a decent utility man in Luna and who knows if there will be a PTBNL involved. Ronnie is a free agent this winter and the Tribe can make an attempt to re-sign him if that's the route they want to go. Yes, Belliard was a fan favorite, but there's no way you can't look at this trade as a good thing.

Alright, I saw the play too, and I'll accept your point that it's only one play wholeheartedly. I shouldn't base my feelings about Belliard on that play. But...it was bad baserunning. He got deked by Ibanez when Belliard should have seen clearly that he couldn't catch it. After all, the play was right in front of him. Ibanez had time to double clutch and still get him by an obvious margin. I'll argue about that, but you're right that Belliard is solid. It seems like his weight has gone up at least a bit over the last couple years.

Sabathia could be a deadline surprise as the Indians seem to be trading their quality players.

Cleveland is trading their old, last year under contract players. Not their young. signed for long-term guys. Where've you been?

Yeah, Sabathia, along with the rest of the core, isn't going anywhere.

Great deal for Cleveland! They received a player in Luna who is just as good as Belliard, but younger and cheaper. This trade helps them both now and in the future.
