Cardinals Weekend Recap

The Phillies took 2 out of 3 from the Cards over the weekend, although the Cardinals did put on a show last night on ESPN, hitting 6 home runs in a 10-2 win. Some other snippets from this weekend:
-Kip Wells did nothing to endear himself to Cardinals Nation with his horrendous start Friday night. Was that his last start or will he get one more chance this week? -Chris Carpenter has some recurring swelling in his elbow. With the season starting to slip away, I think the Cards would be smart to shelve Carp for the rest of the season and let him heal for 2008. Same goes for Mark Mulder, although unlike Carp, I don't really feel Mulder is in a hurry to get back.
-Any talk of Albert Pujols's power outage turns out to have been grossly exaggerated after he hit 4 home runs in the 3 games against Philly. Just as I suspected, his performance in the Derby last Monday carried over to the start of the 2nd half.
-Adam Wainwright has become the de facto ace of the staff and pitched like it last night. He had the Phillies fooled all night with his mix of pitches. He threw 109 pitches in 7 shutout innings, and the Cards needed it after using their bullpen quite a bit Friday and Saturday.
Pitching matchups for the upcoming 3-game series in Miami: MON--Looper (STL) vs. Kim (FLA) TUE--Thompson (STL) vs. Vanden Hurk (FLA) WED--Wells (STL) vs. Willis (FLA)
Finally, here are the NL Central Top 3 through Sunday night: Milwaukee 51-40 Chicago Cubs 47-43 3.5 back Cards 41-47 8.5 back
NOTE: The Cards have scheduled their make-up date for the rainout at Shea from June 28. It will be Thursday, September 27 in between their final road trip of the season to Milwaukee and Pittsburgh. This means the Cardinals will end the season with 21 games in 20 days since they also have a scheduled doubleheader September 15 against the Cubs.
