Cardinals Rule

Jeff Weaver pitched a gem.
Jeff Weaver pitched a gem.

With a 4-2 win Friday night, the St. Louis Cardinals have won the 2006 World Series. The victory wrapped up their 10th World Championship, and their first since 1982.

Jeff Weaver put together a lights-out performance in Game 5, allowing only 4 hits and 2 runs (1 unearned) in 8 innings; Adam Wainwright picked up the save in the ninth, striking out the Series' final batter. David Eckstein drove in two St. Louis runs in the game, continuing his outstanding WS performance (he had 4 hits in Game 4), and the diminutive SS was named the World Series MVP for his efforts.

Although the Tigers held a brief lead in the 4th inning after a Sean Casey homer made it 2-1 Detroit, St. Louis quickly regained the lead in the bottom of that inning, and they never looked back.

For Cards manager Tony La Russa, it was his second time at the helm of a World Series Champion; he managed the winning Oakland A's in the infamous 1989 "Earthquake Series". He joins Sparky Anderson as the only managers to win a WS in both leagues.

I don't know what was more unlikely, an 83-win team taking the WS, or Pnatt using the term "World Champions" to describe an American sports team...

Half of ESPN's experts are still predicting the Tigers to come back and win it...

I don't get why? St. Louis was clearly the better team.

Well, it's pretty obvious now, but this was a team that barely made the playoffs at all, barely squeaked past the Mets in the LCS, and, going into the WS, really hadn't beaten anyone of note (other than New York) since sometime in July. Meanwhile, the Tigers had beaten the both Yankees and the A's (who beat the Twins) pretty handily. But 11 runs in 5 games just isn't going to cut it. Hats off to the Cards -- they really were the better team.
