Tragedy struck the St. Louis Cardinals this morning when pitcher Josh Hancock, 29, was killed in an auto accident while driving westbound on Highway 64/40 within the city limits of St. Louis.
In deference to Hancock and his family, Major League Baseball postponed tonight's 7:05 p.m. game between St. Louis and the Chicago Cubs. The Cardinals and the St. Louis Police Department will make a brief statement to the news media today at 3 p.m. CDT in the Busch Stadium interview room.
Hancock was single and had been a member of the St. Louis Cardinals since February 2006. He helped the team win its 10th World Series title last Fall, leading all St. Louis relievers with 77 innings pitched during the 2006 regular season. In parts of a six major league seasons, Hancock was 9-7 with a 4.20 ERA in 102 games with Boston, Philadelphia, Cincinnati and St. Louis.
