Canes trade for Recchi

The Carolina Hurricanes added another important piece Thursday, acquiring veteran forward Mark Recchi from the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Recchi will serve as a worthy replacement for injured forward Erik Cole, who will miss the rest of the regular season after fracturing a vertebra in his neck less than a week ago. Cole already had a career-high before the injury.

The Hurricanes sent defenseman Niklas Nordgren, minor league forward Krys Kolanos and a second-round pick in 2007 to Pittsburgh.

Carolina really needed another big forward after Cole went down. They have been one of the best if not the best teams in the new NHL, and they probably gave up a bit too much for a player on the downside of his career, but Recchi will fit in nicely and should put some points on the board. Pittsburgh, who signed all of those free agents after winning the draft for Crosby, has been a huge disappointement. They need about 6 Crosbys to start showing signs of life. At least they have the Steelers to cheer about.
