Born on October 18, 1848 in Ware, Massachusetts, Candy Cummings (William Arthur Cummings) played for the New York Mutuals, Baltimore Canaries, Philadelphia White Stockings, Hartford Dark Blues and Cincinnati Reds over the course of his 6 year career. Cummings broke into the bigs on April 22, 1872 with the New York Mutuals, and put up a 2.52 ERA in 497 innings pitched in 1872, his rookie year.

Most people believe that Candy Cummings's best season was 1875, when he posted a 1.60 ERA, won 35 games and struck out 82 batters.
