While US college football fans were cheering for the winners and losers, yesterday, their Canadian counterparts were doing the same up north.
Canadian University Football kicked off yesterday with three games from the Canada West Conference. Calgary traveled to Simon Fraser, Alberta went to Saskatchewan, and Manitoba played Regina.
In the Calgary/Simon Fraser game, the Dinos game plan was a big running game versus the Clan defense. The Dinos tailbacks combined for 356 yards rushing, en route to a 52-14 win over the hosting Clan.
The Calgary Dinos recorded 718 total yards offensively to the Simon Fraser Clan’s 384. Next week Calgary (1-0) hosts Saskatchewan, while on Tuesday the Clan (0-1) travel across town to UBC to face the Thunderbirds.
The second game of the season opener featured the Golden Bears facing the Huskies. The Huskies game plan was a big air game. Hometown QB, Bret Thompson, completed 19 receptions for 358 yards and two touchdowns.
The Huskies recorded 558 total offensive yards, compared to Alberta's 343. Next up for Saskatchewan (1-0) is a visit to Calgary (1-0) on Saturday, Sept. 8. Alberta (0-1) hosts Regina, also next Saturday.
The Manitoba Bisons spoiled the home opener for the University of Regina’s football team on Saturday afternoon, defeating the hometown Rams by a score of 36-13 at Mosaic Stadium.
The Bisons had 309 yards of total offense, while the Rams could muster only 153 yards. The Bisons win extended their win streak over the Rams to four games. Manitoba will travel to British Columbia (0-0) next Saturday, while the Rams will head to Edmonton to square off with the Alberta Golden Bears (0-1).
While US college football is the main focus of college football fans on this site, remember that games are being played elsewhere. And while the Michigan/Appalachian State game was the big news of the weekend, there are other games that are exciting as well.
The Week 1 Canadian Football schedule continues through tomorrow, with games in Toronto, Guelph, Windsor, Laurier, and Western.
