A sold out Stadium of 28,800 fans took in a gorgeous evening of Friday night football at Mosaic Stadium. The game kicked off with both teams’ defenses leading the way. The Stampeders opened the game with the ball, but were forced to an early two and out. A few possessions later the Roughriders would break the ice as Quarterback Kerry Joseph hit Matt Dominguez on a 45 yard pass. The drive would result in an 18 yard field goal by Luca Congi, putting the Green and White in front 3-0. The first quarter ended with very little offence, as the Riders would add a single on a 19 yard Luca Congi field goal miss.
The second quarter opened with another impressive reception by Saskatchewan’s Matt Dominguez for 29 yards. Once again the drive ended in a Roughrider field goal, this time from 21 yards out. A Calgary misfortune on special teams would lead to another score for the Roughriders. Boreham’s 47 yard punt would slip threw the fingers of Calgary returner Calvin Bannister. The fumble was recovered by Saskatchewan Fullback Chris Szarka, starting the drive on the Stampeders 28 yard line. However, the Red and White defence would continue their first half trend of bending but never breaking, as the Riders settled for a 20 yard field goal. Later in the second quarter Canadian Receiver Andy Fantuz showed great athleticism, hauling in a 44 yard reception over the middle, moving the chains into Stamps territory. The Riders drive would be stopped short, settling with a 32 yard field goal, to put them ahead 13-0 at the half.
Stampeder Quarterback Akili Smith would start at the pivot position for the second half. After a couple of short drive’s Smith would connect with Marc Boerigter on a 54 yard strike up the middle for the first major of the game. The drive consisted of three plays for 65 yards. At the end of the third, the Red and White trailed 16-7.
Heading into the fourth quarter Roughriders Kerry Joseph returned behind center for the Green and White. Joseph would make an immediate impact, marching the Riders down field for their first major of the game. Starting from the Stampeders 49 yard line, Joseph picked up three rushes for 32 yards. On third and five Joseph would finish the drive with a five yard run.
Smith would lead the Stamps right back downfield starting from their own 29 yard line. Newcomer Running Back Ken Simonton finished the drive with a 17 touchdown yard reception to close the gap to nine points. Shortly after, defensive back Sadrick Williams looked to have a great interception play, however it was called back with a pass interference penalty.
Later in the final quarter Smith would once again drive the Stamps the length of the field. Starting from their own 7 yard line and finishing with a 10 yard touchdown reception by Brett Ralph. Ralph made a nice move to dive into the end zone and pull the Stamps within two points. This was followed by an unsuccessful on side kick attempt by Sandro DeAngelis, landing in the hands of Saskatchewan Receiver Matt Dominguez. The Roughriders would run out the clock and seal the victory 23-21.
The Stampeders will kick-off the regular season next week at home on Friday, June 30th vs the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
