0 commentsKevin Glenn threw three touchdown passes as the Winnipeg Blue Bombers defeated the Calgary Stampeders 28-13 Saturday night, keeping alive their hopes for second place in the CFL East Division.
Glenn connected with Chris Brazzell, Milt Stegall and Derick Armstrong for TDs in front of 30,092 fans, the largest crowd of the season at Canad Inns Stadium.
Stegall's 10-yard catch was his 136th career TD, leaving him one major away from tying the CFL all-time record shared by former running backs Mike Pringle and George Reed.
Winnipeg (9-8) wraps up the season next Saturday in B.C., while Toronto (10-7) hosts Montreal (9-8) next weekend. If Montreal wins and the Bombers beat B.C., Montreal wins the three-way tie because of its record against Winnipeg and Toronto.
Winnipeg would then finish second because it won the season series against the Argos.
Calgary (10-8) has already locked up second place in the West Division and will host Saskatchewan in the West Division semifinal Nov. 5. The Stampeders finish the regular season with a bye.
Bomber running back Charles Roberts rushed 27 times for 151 yards and one TD, giving him 1,560 yards on the season and the CFL rushing title for the second straight year. Roberts has rushed for more than 1,500 yards in four straight seasons.
Calgary running back Joffrey Reynolds had 15 carries for 74 and finishes the season with 1,541 yards for second place.
Receiver Jeremaine Copeland had a four-yard TD catch and Sandro DeAngelis booted field goals from 43 and nine yards for Calgary's scoring.
DeAngelis' first field goal was his 55th of the season, breaking the team record of 54 set by Mark McLoughlin in 1996.
Trailing 10-7 at halftime, Winnipeg went ahead for good on Stegall's touchdown at 4:08 of the third quarter. Stegall has seven TDs this season despite missing four games with injuries.
Armstrong caught a 10-yard pass from Glenn at 10:51 of the third quarter to stretch the lead 21-10.
The fourth-quarter scoring included DeAngelis' nine-yard field goal and Roberts' one-yard TD run, his 10th score of the season.
The Stampeders notched the game's first points on a 10-play, 91-yard drive that ended with Copeland's TD catch at 11:06 of the first quarter. Reynolds keyed the drive with 51 rushing yards.
Winnipeg defensive back Robert Bean helped set up his team's first score when he intercepted a Henry Burris pass in the second quarter. It was the CFL rookie's fourth pick of the season.
The Bombers took over at Calgary's 49-yard line and Glenn connected with Brazzell for a 12-yard TD with 2:30 remaining.
DeAngelis hit his 43-yarder with 40 seconds remaining in the half to give the Stamps a 10-7 lead.
Glenn completed 17 of 28 pass attempts for 201 yards. Burris was 15-of-29 for 155 yards.
