Cabrera and Willis Shipped to Detroit?

by Redsoxfaithful38

Senior baseball writer Peter Gammons reported that the Florida Marlins sent Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis to the Detroit Tigers for star prospects Cameron Maybin and Andrew Miller, along with catcher Mike Rabelo and three other minor league prospects. This is a great deal for both sides as the Tigers add a power bat to an already stellar lineup as well as an innings eater at worst with the possibility of an ace. The Marlins receive uber-prospects in centerfielder Maybin who is regarded as one of the top 5 prospects in all of baseball as well as former first-rounder Miller. Not to mention the other four prospects snagged in this deal. This makes the Tigers serious contenders, as if they weren't already. This came at total suprise to everyone as the Tiger's came out of nowhere, but Sports Review Magazine seemed to have the scoop at 10:52 this morning. The question now is whether the Angels will still actively search for a power bat.

-Ozzie Guillen confirmed the White Sox interest in Andruw Jones despite their dislike for Scott Boras.

-Angels' GM, Tony Reagins, denied any Angel interest in Johan Santana. This makes the Red Sox seem to be the only players a deal. But, I think everyone's learned to expect the unexpected this off-season. But the Red Sox current proposals stand at Lester, Lowrie, Masterson, Crisp, and Kalish or Ellsbury, Lowrie, Masterson, and possibly Kalish. A deal could get done tonight or early tomorrow morning, but these things tend to drag out. Besides, the Red Sox would still need to reach an agreement with Santana concerning a contract extension.

ESPN is saying right now that Jim Layland told Andrew Miller that this isn't completely a done deal yet...interesting. As a fan of an AL team I shudder to think how strong the AL will be this year if this trade goes through.

You know Miller or Maybin is trying to figure out a way they can fail their physicals so the trade doesn't go through.

This is just what the Marlins do. I heard a stat thrown out on the radio this morning that if this deal goes through, Florida's payroll will be under 10 million this year! Unbelievable!! They still have Hanley Ramirez and Uggla, but this team is a quadruple A team in my eyes. They are soooo young. In a few years, they may be solid if they develop, but once they do develop into something, they will just get shipped out before they get paid. Florida must have the best scouts in the league. Their abiliity to make these types of deals year in and year out proves it.

The Marlins payroll is absolutely pathetic. There are going to be tons of players making more money than their entire team. The MLB needs to institute a minimum salary. I would also like them to put a max but whatever.

The Marlins receive more from revenue profit sharing than what Loria is willing to spend on the team payroll.

They have Hanley Ramirez, but at least according to http://www2....nley_Ramirez he is currently on a 1-year deal. Expect him to move to "greener pastures" soon.

It's technically a one-year deal, meaning he's eligible for arbitration after this year. He's still controlled by the Marlins until after the 2011 season.
