I was listening to one of the ESPN podcasts today and somebody said something about the Tigers and Yankees will be playing each other in October and it will be fun to watch. I disagree. I realize my team won't be playing in Autumn, but the Tigers and Yankees aren't really two teams I want to see playing if I have to watch someone else.
This got me thinking about how I like watching some teams play and not others and why that is and so on. I started toying with making lists of my favorite teams and least favorite teams to watch, but then I decided it would be more fun to do it by division.
Just a reminder, these are just my preference to watch, not necessarily my favorite teams or who I think is better or worse. Just thought I'd throw that in before the flaming began. :-)
CPCP's MLB Watchability Standings
American League East
Baltimore Orioles - I don't know why, but I've always like watching Baltimore.
Boston Red Sox - As much as I don't like the BoSox, I like watching them play. Who knew?
Toronto Blue Jays - Everyone likes an underdog and in this division, Toronto will always be one.
Tampa Bay Devil Rays - Sure, they suck. But it's fun to watch young players that still care about being in the bigs, even if they do play for a bad team.
New York Yankees - Too much of a good thing or a bad thing is a bad thing. I've seen and heard enough about the Yankees for five lifetimes, thanks.
American League Central
Cleveland Indians - They are my favorite team. The end.
Kansas City Royals - Perhaps it's because I lived in KC for a summer, but I have a special place in my heart for this Royaly pathetic franchise. At least they have a cool ballpark.
Minnesota Twins - I think Indians/Twins games are my favorite. Battle of the small markets. They're usually well-matched and have a great series
Detroit Tigers - Ok, I admit I'm bitter that they got so good so fast and I want it to end. Now.
Chicago White Sox - I just hate the White Sox. Almost as much as the Yankees.
American League West
Oakland Athletics - Always interesting to see how well "Moneyball" is paying off.
Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim - The name is dumb but I love watching a team that plays with heart and that's usually the LAAofA.
Texas Rangers - I'm pretty unbiased toward Texas either way. I don't really have any feelings about watching them, positive or negative.
Seattle Mariners - I've often thought of moving to Seattle, but for some reason I really don't like the Mariners. Maybe it's because I'm not a fan of Ken Griffey Jr. and I still partially associate him with Seattle. Maybe it's because I thought the whole Ichiro as ROY was bull. I don't know.
National League East
Atlanta Braves - You'd think I'd have the same feelings towards them as I do the Yankees. Especially since I've seen more of them thanks to TBS, but I still like watching a Braves game.
New York Mets - This isn't a team I usually hear too much about. They don't get near the attention the Yankees do, so I like to watch them and see what's they've been up to.
Philadelphia Phillies - Not a whole lot of reasoning for their position. It's just where they fell.
Washington Nationals - Truthfully, I've never seen them play, but I'd like to.
Florida Marlins - I have trouble supporting a team that treats championship teams like crap. I don't think the Florida ownership appreciates anything but cash. They treat what every team wants as a chance to get rich quick.
National League Central
St. Louis Cardinals - The Cards are probably my second favorite overall to watch. Just seeing Albert Pujols hit makes it worth watching a game.
Cincinnati Reds - They'd take the Cards place if it wasn't for Junior. And they do when Junior's on the DL.
Houston Astros - I used to consider Houston my favorite NL team, but they've made some odd moves in recent history and obviously blew a World Series visit. They've lost their luster as of late.
Milwaukee Brewers - They've certainly made themselves more watchable as of late, but they still have some work to do.
Chicago Cubs - Lovable Losers? Nope, just losers for the most part in my book. I think Harry Carey added a lot more to the lovable part than people realize.
Pittsburgh Pirates - I'm just going to move on and not spit in their wounds.
National League West
San Diego Padres - This is another one of those teams I'm not sure why I like to watch them, but I do.
Los Angeles Dodgers - They're a classic team, what else can I say?
Colorado Rockies - The Coors mystique is wearing thin, but the Rockies still usually are fun to watch.
Arizona Diamondbacks - Not really a special reason for this one.
San Francisco Giants - I've never liked the Giants and the fact they support Barry Bonds so much doesn't help.
So there it is. Obviously, I'm not going to enjoy playoff time too much this year, but that's just the way this season has went.
