Buy or Sell: May 17

Time to get back to my weekly Buy or Sell. Sure, this might be a slight rip off of the “Around the Horn” ESPN show, but I try to add that extra special twist (i.e. write something down, and not sound ever-so-slightly incompetent…see Woody Paige…ok well remotely competent…maybe?). Whatever, Lets take a look at some of the latest in Sports and the Chair and see what’s been up and what’s been down…

Buy or Sell

Vick Licked?

Most of us probably know Michael Vick as the enigmatic quarterback of the Atlanta Falcons, as well as the water bottle toting, dog training fasted QB (or even player!) in the NFL. Recently, Vick has been associated with a certain kennel club in the greater Smithfield area. Vick claims that he was a ‘vicktim’ of his own generosity, as his relatives (namely his nephew) took advantage of him. While the ‘wheels of justice’ for this type of crime may take a certain amount of time, but the ‘wheels’ of public opinion and the ‘wheels’ of Roger Goodell will certainly move much, much quicker

Vick has already witness the suspensions of Pacman Jones and Chris Henry, as well as, the potential (and likely) suspension of Tank Johnson and he knows that his fate rests in Goodell’s hands, with all indications pointing to a probable suspension. While personally, I disagree with Goodell’s handling of this situations (if you’re going to treat them like any other type of professional, than a certain amount of due process for issues that don’t affect a job should be allowed…that’s another article in and of itself), the fact remains that with the current status of the NFL, Vick did not manage the proverbial self as well as he should have. The result, I think, will be between a 2 and 4 game sentence (however, I’ve been wrong numerous times…I did expect a full season for Pacman).

Conclusion

Sell Vick, Sell the Dogs, Sell this QB (He’ll never win the big one…guaranteed!)

Fond of Bonds

Barry Bonds will break the career Home Run Record. This is a fact, it will happen and we will all have to come to terms with it (I have…). There is nothing we can do about it and eventually, rightfully or not, we will have to acknowledge that Barry Bonds has hit the most home runs in Major League history. More importantly, Bonds is currently projected to break the record around June 17 th, or approximately when Curt Schilling may or may not pitch. Schilling was quoted on the “Dennis and Callahan Show” as saying:

"I mean, he admitted that he used steroids…I mean, there's no gray area. He admitted to cheating on his wife, cheating on his taxes, and cheating on the game, so I think the reaction around the league, the game, being what it is, in the case of what people think. Hank Aaron not being there. The commissioner [Bud Selig] trying to figure out where to be. It's sad…And I don't care that he's black, or green, or purple, or yellow, or whatever. It's unfortunate … there's good people and bad people. It's unfortunate that it's happening the way it's happening."

While its plausible that ‘they’ may want the home run to take place in San Francisco, the possibility of it being in Boston is distinct and Schilling has no intention of giving it up. The question is, if you’re Curt Schilling, what do you do (and I know practically all you AGMs have the same opinion and it rhymes with ‘Mean Fall.’

Conclusion

Buy Bonds…Let’s get it done and get it over with. And if you can get him in Fantasy, take him! That’s how me andThe Shark (I think) got over it!

Philler

To be honest, I rarely have the opportunity to gloat, but since I was rereading an article I wrote a few months ago, I noted that quite a few items I wrote about Jimmy Rollins infamous quote in January have seemingly not only became true, but seem to be the key determinants, as I had suggested. While, as of right now, I’ve seemed to get David Wright and Ryan Howard wrong, the rest seem to be right on the button. See below of the major excerpt of the Phillies Buy/Sell in January

My pick is going to be consistency and there will be a lot of wild card players in this. I think the major players (Wright, Reyes, Howard, Utley, etc) will play their parts as well as ever (See, I got part of that wrong!), but the players who aren’t always a part of it will be the difference makers. Look to the aforementioned Mayne (Bingo!) to step it up, Perez will need to find consistency (Yep!) and the Mets corner outfielders will need to play well (Shawn Green and Moises Alou)(They are and they need to). If this team is to have any chance at a World Series any time soon, its now. The Phils will need similar help from the corner outfielders (namely Pat Burrell, who will need to actually protect Howard this year)(Which he’s not and you can tell) and newly acquired third baseman Wes Helms who essentially needs to be better offensively than Abraham Nunez or current free agent David Bell (And he’s not). This one, I think, will essentially be decided by the beginning of September, but once again, don’t count out the Atlanta Braves (Yeah they are!), like I am right now.

Conclusion

Buy the Phils starters over the Mets, right now. (Can’t get them all, Can I?)

Rattling a Sabre

Ok, the NHL isn't exactly the nation’s cup of tea anymore (Sorry Alex!), but its major playoff time and the Buffalo Sabres appeared poised to march into the Finals, President’s Trophy in tow. However, the Ottawa Senators seem to have other plans and the result was a potential sweep, but more likely a 5 or 6 game series that will result in a very quick team moving to the finals for the first time (New Franchise). Do I feel bad for the Sabres. In one word, No. Nothing about this team has ever made me happy, impressed or even remotely glad that they have returned. Lindy Ruff is a complete jerk, meathead and goon (Practically pulled a John Cheney in March) and is revered as one of the upper echelon coaches currently (and probably of the last 10 years or so). An acquaintance of mine, once suggested that you have to root for Buffalo in this situation, the city has had enough heartbreak and they deserve it. Completely dejected, I suggested that I could easily name 5 other cities that have had it worse and his response was that, quote “General sucking doesn’t count.” Naturally, he was referencing my beloved Philadelphia Teams. Look Buffalo, you’re nothing special. You’re a crap town that should be part of Canada. Your football team was literally good, for 4 years, you built a new baseball stadium and instead got a triple A team and your oh so loved hockey team, almost folded a mere 5 years ago. Get over yourself.

Conclusion

Sell Buffalo…to Canada

And for those of you who are wondering why I didn’t do a Buy or Sell for anything NBA related, I’ll leave you with this:

I like the NHL. It's the best sport in America. The problem for America, is that Americans don't play it as well as everyone else. (I.e. Canada, Russia, Sweden, Finland, Czech Republic, Slovakia...)

Yeah, sorry Alex, its not...

It's not even that we're not that good at it...because most sports Americans like are regional/city based anways. Look at baseball as an example...a very large amount of players are foreign born (caribbean is a sound example, but the japanese are certainly making their presences felt in quality over quantity).

American's just dont have the same national pride as other nations because we're so focused on the regional stuff, most of the time...and the Americas (North and south) are typically dominated by the US in most sports anways (hockey being an exception and even then, only canada is better)

Plus, it's really hard to get into hockey if you grow up in a place where there's, you know, no ice...

Seems reasonable...I grew up in Southeast PA...we had ice, but nothing large enough (or frozen solid enough) to ever play ice hockey, so my friends and I played a lot of street and roller hockey... But you're right, the ice/weather thing has a lot to do with it...
