Buy or Sell: June 19th

In the first of what I hope is many more additions I am presenting a Buy/Sell on many of the issues that are currently facing us. I hope to use your ideas from articles and comments to create a buy/sell opinion and present my opinion on each. My hope is that you will all debate these and provide as much feedback as possible.

Buy or Sell

Alex Rodriguez over David Wright

The big numbers over last season and this one.
Alex Rodriguez: .311 AVG, .412 OBP, 63 HR, 180 RBI (227 Games) David Wright: .314 AVG, .397 OBP, 42 HR, 157 RBI (227 Games) And of course to give you an idea of A-Rod in comparison to Wright over his first 1.5 seasons (Full) .329 AVG, .382 OBP, 46 HR, 165 RBI It may be safe to conclude the David Wright is the next A-Rod.

Conclusion

Sell A-Rod over Wright

Roger Clemens Conspiracy

I am not historian on steroids or medical treatment in baseball, but this seems like a giant load of crap. I love conspiracies as much as the next guy, but you can’t be serious. Most recently a comment by Steaksammich pretty much made me think this is impossible. His theory is that any media member with press passes and the ability to out this sort would have been all over it, like the Feds on Bond’s house. There is no way a young gun reporter or even an idiot blogger like me wouldn’t be willing to churn out a story if they had evidence that Clemens did steroids.

Conclusion

Sell the steroids

Best QB Ever?!

I loved this debate almost as much as the Best Sports Cities. People were trumpeting names like Brett Favre, Terry Bradshaw and Joe Montana. I think this is a great debate and I said it before and I’ll say it again, until someone comes along and out right dominants the competition (Peyton Manning) and wins multiple rings (Tom Brady) this argument will continue. That’s why my pick is Joe Montana, but it will always be debated

Conclusion

Buy the debate and Montana

Curses, do they exist?

They absolutely exist. Like Steaksammich said, “everyone needs a scapegoat…” and oftentimes this are also the things people remember most. Everyone remembers Bill Buckner or Mitch Williams or Grady Little’s decision. But I think more importantly, its what makes sports so mystical. For those of us who don’t have teams that buy championships, the occasional win or loathing of a sports curse is what makes it more fun. I mean, come on, without curses, who would have blown up an “evil” baseball and made it into spaghetti sauce!

Conclusion

Buy Sports Curses

The World Cup

Like one of my previous articles http://www.armchairgm.com/mwiki/index.php?title=Soccer%2C_I%27m_Sorry%21 , I think that the World Cup is really starting to take some sort of grip in the US. Even I, a diehard Football and Baseball fan am starting to watch a little. Its exciting, there’s more to it than scoring and who doesn’t enjoy a few slide tackles of Italian wieners. Perhaps that’s the one thing I don’t like. The sport is a little to light. For example I was watching the USA vs. Italy game and the Italians were constantly diving. I think if they loosened up the rules for the US game (MLS), perhaps Americans would start to like it more. Also, if the US can make it to the second round, perhaps they will gain a lot of attention. The way it appears to be working out is: If the USA best Ghana and the Italians beat the Czechs, the USA will face Brazil in the second round. Quite a daunting task, but if the USA could upset them, this may be just the chance for soccer to truly launch into the USA…emphasis on could be.

Conclusion

Buy The World Cup

How could you not say anything about hockey? For that, I say: Sell this article!

Because there are only about 3 people in the country that actually care and he's not one of them.

Fine, Sell Hockey, no one cares... I like hockey as much as the next guy, but they need a boost, and these finals still aren't it. I will watch though. Should be an exciting game...

Aren't it. We're about to see a Game 7. Did you see the first period of Game 6? I thought somebody was going to get killed out there with how guys were flying around after the puck. I'm not the biggest hockey fan either, but I can't wait for tonight.

I obviously stole the concept, but i think its entertaining. I'd like to keep it to topics that are discussed on AGM. Also, is there a way to add comments for a specific portion (IE comment on the clemens conspiracy). I think that might make it a little better. None the less, thanks!

Couldn't agree more on Clemens. People who know I like the Astros like to defend Bonds by saying that Clemens obviously uses steroids. Really? It's that obvious? Then why is Clemens still a dominant pitcher in his early-mid 40s, without the trademark injuries consistent with steroids? I would buy Craig Biggio doing steroids over Clemens. That's just stupid.
I have to disagree on Wright, though. I take him over ARod right now, but I think it's early to call Wright the next Alex Rodriguez. First of all, Wright will NEVER steal like ARod did in his heyday, so I don't think he can ever be the full-package player ARod was. Secondly, compare defenses. ARod's WORST fielding percentage for a full season was last year, playing out of position, and it was .943. In Wright's young career, his career fielding percentage is .948. If he maintains his .957 percentage he has this year, it will be better than only one of ARod's seasons, and will only approach the '97 season, when he fielded .962. Wright might get better. He might not. But with really just a season and a half under his belt, I think it's too early to compare him to another player using stats. Especially when that player, as I said, was still a better all-around player than Wright will ever be.

That's fair on ARod, but i tried to bring in stats from ARod's early career. TO that extent, I had no idea Wright wasn't that good of a fielder...

That's understandable. He's one of those players like Rafael Furcal, where they may not be great fielders statistically, but it's hard to remember they're not, because when they make plays they tend to be flashy. That's the athleticism of Wright. It's probably the reason why ARod won the Gold Glove last year instead of Hank Blalock, who led the AL in fielding percentage for third basebmen. Blalock catches flack for not having the best range in the world, but you have to wonder this - would you rather have a third baseman that doesn't get to every ball, but throws out runners when he does; or would you rather have a third baseman that has awesome range, but costs your team runs by committing errors on runners they would not have gotten out?
