Born on July 8, 1875 in Poughkeepsie, New York, Buttons Briggs (Herbert Theodore Briggs) played for the Chicago Colts, Chicago Orphans and Chicago Cubs over the course of his 5 year career. Briggs broke into the bigs on April 23, 1896 with the Chicago Colts, and put up a 4.31 ERA in 194 innings pitched in 1896, his rookie year.

Most people believe that Buttons Briggs's best season was 1904, when he posted a 2.05 ERA, won 19 games and struck out 112 batters.
