Bulls Continue to Seek Low-post Presence

It’s a problem that has plagued the Chicago Bulls for a few seasons now, and one that they failed to address this offseason – the need for a solid low-post scoring presence.

Eddy Curry, dealt away three years ago, was the last Bulls’ centre capable of generating offense down low. And although he was injury prone and had a troubling heart condition (figuratively and literally) when the Bulls decided to part ways with him, he did manage 16.1 PPG in his final season with Chicago.

Ben Wallace, never known for his offense to begin with, has been downright invisible on the scoreboard this year with 5.1 PPG. Sadly, that leads all Bulls’ centres. Yes, I know that’s not why he gets the big bucks, but Wallace’s rebounds, blocks and assists are also down significantly this year.

Last season, Big Ben was only marginally better, averaging 6.4 PPG to pace the pivots.

Back in 2005-06, Tyson Chandler led the way for Chicago centres with a whopping 5.3 PPG. Of course, since leaving the Bulls and landing on the Hornets, Chandler has really begun to develop his offensive game.

Curry, for his part, couldn’t hold a candle to either Chandler or Wallace as a rebounder, so it’s not as if he was the yardstick against which Bulls’ big men should be measured.

Prior to Curry, the Bulls still couldn’t find anyone to score in the middle. Bill Cartwright had a couple of decent seasons while Stacey King supplied some offense off the bench in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s for Chicago. King’s role was then taken by Canadian Bill Wennington, who was even less gifted as a scorer. Luc Longley, in his final season as a Bull, managed to put up a decent year with 11.4 PPG, but the rest of his stay in the Windy City was fairly unremarkable. Of course, back then, with Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen on board, it really didn’t matter, did it?

The team’s first round pick this offseason, Joakim Noah, is a fantastic energy player, but I don’t see him ever developing into a scoring threat.

It’s pretty sad when David Harrison, who plays all of 14.5 MPG, is a more dangerous scoring threat than your current top centre.

Remind me again why the Bulls are scraping close to the basement in the Eastern Conference? I mean, this club would be fine if the people who were being paid to score were scoring, but with the worst offense in the NBA – and no help coming from down low – it’s a small wonder why the Bulls are struggling along at 6-12.

Being 6-12, 7 games behing first place (Pistons), and in last place was DEFINITELY not what I expected from the Bulls.

But you have to ask yourself this question: (I'm sure you've already asked it to yourselves a billion times if you're a Bulls fan) How come the Bulls have done so good recently (besides this season), and now they suck? Ben Wallace has still done all right defensively, Gordon is putting up good numbers offensively, Kirk Hinrich is... eh.

Losing their first 4 games was tough, and losing 10 of their first 12 was even tougher, but they're coming back. I think it's because teams (in general) expect them to be a lot better. They now know a lot more about the team how certain players play. The pressure is now on Chicago to prove their point once again.

The problem was solved in 2006 draft with the number two overall pick of LaMarcus Aldridge, and then it was traded away in a matter of seconds for forth overall pick Tyrus Thomas and the useless Viktor Khyrapa. Getting rid of Eddy Curry was the Bull's best move which landed New York's number two pick in the draft. A low post scorer is what they wanted and a it was what they got, momentarily. The Aldridge-Thomas trade was most likely John Paxson's worst move ever. So how did the players pan out, well while Aldridge is leading Portland in scoring averaging almost 19 points and 8 rebounds a game, Thomas averages a meager 6 points and 5 rebounds; and as for Khyrapa he doesn't even play. The Bulls needed one thing, a center, and instead they traded the dominant center/forward they drafted for an inconsistent and overrated Thomas. Aldridge is now leading his team while Thomas is making friends with the bench. Chicago lives and dies by its jump-shooting, a low post scorer has been in dire need for years. While Ben Wallace, the biggest joke in basketball, is destroying the flow of our offense, Aldridge would have been the player to make Bulls a legitimate contender in the East.

The Bulls and about 20 other teams in the NBA are looking for a lowpost player who can take their team over the edge.

Joakin Noah will be good, although I seem him developing into a Ben Wallace type player.

Noah CAN'T score down low, the last thing any team needs is another Ben Wallace, a lot of energy and no skill. He straight up bricked a wide open dunk right off the front of the rim last night, hilarious.
