When the league "blacks out" a game, they pull it from local television stations. Any given game must have so many tickets sold in order for the game to be shown on local television. In essence, the people that buy tickets give the rest of the people in the Buffalo area the right to stay home and watch the game for free without spending $50 a ticket plus concessions. If the NFL doesn't get theirs, the general public doesn't get their free Sunday afternoon entertainment. The game can still be shown in the away team's market, just not within a certain mileage of the home team's stadium.

Oh, I see - I guess this helps the NFL guarantee as many people go to the game as possible. I like that rule. Thanks for the explanation.
